NEW: Trump’s inauguration is expected to be moved indoors Monday due to dangerously cold temperatures projected in DC. Plans are underway to have Trump be sworn in inside the Capitol Rotunda and the parade potentially be held at the Capital One Arena.

Gone are the optics of the thousands of fans down the National Mall watching him get sworn in.
Somebody call Sean Spicer, who will insist that there were 1.5 million people inside the Capitol Rotunda.
ON EDIT:
Looks like Trump himself may have chickened out, fearing no one would show up.
Even funnier.

(32,761 posts)An analysis from 2014 believes he died from typhoid. However, the fact that he was fine for three weeks, indicates that the inauguration didn't do him in.

(4,587 posts)On Wednesday, March 24, 1841, Harrison took his daily morning walk to local markets, without a coat or hat. Despite being caught in a sudden rainstorm, he did not change his wet clothes upon return to the White House. On Friday, March 26, Harrison became ill with cold-like symptoms and sent for his doctor, Thomas Miller, though he told the doctor he felt better after having taken medication for "fatigue and mental anxiety". The next day, Saturday, the doctor was called again, and arrived to find Harrison in bed with a "severe chill", after taking another early morning walk. Miller applied mustard plaster to his stomach and gave him a mild laxative, and he felt better that afternoon. At 4:00 a.m. Sunday, March 28, Harrison developed severe pain in the side and the doctor initiated bloodletting; the procedure was terminated when there was a drop in his pulse rate. Miller also applied heated cups to the president's skin to enhance blood flow. The doctor then gave him castor oil and medicines to induce vomiting, and diagnosed him with pneumonia in the right lung. A team of doctors was called in Monday, March 29, and they confirmed right lower lobe pneumonia.
No official announcements were made concerning Harrison's illness, which fueled public speculation and concern the longer he remained out of public view. Washington society had noticed his uncharacteristic absence from church on Sunday. Conflicting and unconfirmed newspaper reports were based on leaks by people with contacts in the White House. A Washington paper reported on Thursday, April 1, that Harrison's health was decidedly better. In fact, Harrison's condition had seriously weakened, and Cabinet members and family were summoned to the White House—his wife Anna had remained in Ohio due to her own illness. According to papers in Washington on Friday, Harrison had rallied, despite a Baltimore Sun report that his condition was of a "more dangerous character". n the evening of Saturday, April 3, Harrison developed severe diarrhea and became delirious, and at 8:30 p.m. he uttered his last words, to his attending doctor, assumed to be for Vice President John Tyler: "Sir, I wish you to understand the true principles of the government. I wish them carried out. I ask nothing more." Harrison died at 12:30 a.m. on April 4, 1841, Palm Sunday, nine days after becoming ill and exactly one month after taking the oath of office.
The prevailing theory at the time was that his illness had been caused by the bad weather at his inauguration three weeks earlier. Jane McHugh and Philip A. Mackowiak did an analysis in Clinical Infectious Diseases (2014), examining Miller's notes and records showing that the White House water supply was downstream of public sewage, and they concluded that he likely died of septic shock due to "enteric fever".
So it appears he did catch pneumonia, perhaps partly due to walking outside without a coat or hat and then not changing clothes after being caught in a rainstorm, only it wasn't at the inauguration but a few weeks later. Once he caught pneumonia, he also came down with the enteric fever which likely killed him.

Suffering both at the same time would have just devastated his ability for his immune system to fight back against either.

(2,730 posts)He felt better after the first medicine (for anxiety) was administered--I bet he did. They administered all kinds of drugs we wouldn't allow today. I wonder what it was. Blood-letting (until his pulse dropped), mustard plaster, laxative, heated cups....
They say Garfield died not of the assassinations bullets but the medical care that followed.

(4,587 posts)He's already clearly not well. I've got to think it wouldn't take much for him to catch pneumonia or something similar.
Add in the fact that they know the crowd wasn't going to be very large (Hotels are booked waaayyyy below capacity unlike normal inaugurations where they are close to 100%) so having it inside will be less embarrassing in terms of having a really small crowd.

(4,587 posts)How is everyone going to get to the arena in the midst of a “major snowstorm?”
I’ve ridden their Metro during rain storms and the water pours down the entrances. I assume snow will accumulate there.
How will snow plows be able to cope?
Might not be a very big crowd there, either.
Wiz Imp
(4,587 posts)Sorry, I inadvertently missed where you mentioned a major snow storm forecast. The last I saw was a forecast for light snow at worst and I didn't realize it had changed. Been to DC probably a hundred times in my life but never during a snow storm. But yes, my brother was there during a blizzard and can attest that DC doesn't handle even a little snow very well. So it will likely make it much harder for the idiots who go to actually get there, but I note that there is a metro station right at the arena.
I would hate to be there in a bad snow storm. I’ve been there in a bad rainstorm like I said. Can you say waterfall?😳

Wind chill temperatures fell into the -10° to -20°F range in the afternoon. Reagan's inauguration was also moved inside the Capitol, the last one to do so until this year.
