In fact, just talking about it has brought it closer to reality.
To summarize.
There is and HAS been an active Independence movement in Greenland. They can separate from Denmark via a national referendum.
I guess there hasn't been enough support to do it... UNTIL Trump started talking. Now they're hoping for a referendum THIS YEAR.
Greenland independence breaks it away from Denmark... and the US wants to be there to become their "new best friend"
New military bases... resource extraction... those 60,000 people will become quite wealthy.
It might not become a State, per se... but it will have the same effect.

(942 posts)If so, I wonder how they'd feel about trading their healthcare for American gun violence.
I know most Canadians were opposed when Trump floated Canada as the 51st state.

(121,931 posts)Greenland actually wants greater EU involvement.
"We (IA) would like to see the EU much more engaged when it comes to rare earths. We know that 73% of everything the EU needs when it comes to rare earths can be found in Greenland, and right now we have more or less a Chinese monopoly when it comes to rare earths," she pointed out, seeing an opportunity for the EU to invest in this area.
In recent years, the EU has pushed for greater cooperation with the island on energy and rare earths, and Commission President Ursula von der Leyen visited the island last March to open an EU office in Nuuk, Greenland's capital.
However, Chemnitz believes that the EU and Denmark have not paid enough attention to Greenlanders but now have a window of opportunity to strengthen relations with the island in a "more realistic way", including on defence and security.

(16,456 posts)Greenland isn't a member of the EU. Greenland left in 1985, following a referendum in 1982 with 53% voting for withdrawal after a dispute over fishing rights. The Greenland Treaty formalized their exit.
In March 2015, the President of the EU Commission, the Prime Minister of Denmark and the Greenland Premier signed 'an umbrella' framework document outlining EU-Greenland relations, a "Joint Declaration on relations between the European Union, on the one hand, and the Government of Greenland and the Government of Denmark, on the other". By this document, the EU confirms its long lasting links with Greenland and reiterates the geostrategic importance of Greenland for the EU
In 2024 an opinion poll found that 60 percent of Greenland's population would vote in favor of re-joining the EU, an increase from 2021 where only 40 percent were in favor.

(15,945 posts)And Egade said just a few days ago they were hoping for an independence referendum in 2025.
After that they can apply to join the EU or stay separate... we'll see.

(707 posts)Greenlands Prime minister made a statement, he's open to talking with Trump.
https://nypost.com/2025/01/11/us-news/greenland-leaders-ready-to-talk-with-trump/
"Greenlands leader Múte Egede said he is prepared to enter into negotiations with President-elect Trump about the future of the mineral-rich arctic territory but warned his people had no interest in becoming Americans."
"We have a desire for independence, a desire to be the master of our own house
This is something everyone should respect, he said. Greenland is for the Greenlandic people. We do not want to be Danish, we do not want to be American. We want to be Greenlandic.
(Context - Greenland has not been happy with Dutch rule for quite some time. There is a desire to split off from Denmark, to be sovergn.)

(8,808 posts)Denmark provides more than half a billion dollars annually to Greenland, accounting for more than half its public budget and twenty percent of its GDP.
I hardly think a GOP dominated US government will be in favor of all that "socialism" currently funded by Denmark.
Then too--with our relaxed gun laws they can probably look forward to lots more school shootings.
If people in Greenland think a US sponsored corporate destruction of their environment will somehow benefit the average Greenlander they're in for a cruel awakening.
