100,000 ducks to be killed on Long Island because of Bird Flu.

The last duck farm on New York's Long Island, Crescent Duck Farm, must kill its entire flock of almost 100,000 ducks and may go out of business, its owner said, because of an outbreak of bird flu.

Long Island has become very "built up" and land is at a premium for development.

There used to be a lot of duck farms on the East End (North and South Shores), but no more.

Even with breeding, it would take a long, long time to build up 100,000 ducks again.

As it were, ducks in my retail grocery last month (Christmas) cost almost $40 for a 7 lb. bird. Think $100.
