EDITED ! -- I said "tough shit" to a neighbor today.

Last edited Tue Jan 28, 2025, 01:11 AM - Edit history (1)

All my neighbors are on medicare or advantage plan. It's a senior village. One of the most outspoken of the MAGA supporters who lives here was crabbing at me this morning about the cost of her insulin. She filled Dec 27 - $10. Yesterday? $782.

TOUGH SHIT popped out before I could stop it. Loud enough for everyone to hear.

We had a short conversation after that. I did back track it a little because I really wanted her to see that her selfishness hurt her too. She got what she asked for. "Illegals" and "welfare queens" in need of insulin got cut off from a fair price. If no one benefits, that includes her.

I'm telling you, the MAGA geezers around here are not happy. Prices are going up, not down. The noise about invading Canada has them all upset. Firing inspectors and stopping agencies from informing us about health and safety issues has everyone on edge around here.

They got what they asked for. TOUGH SHIT.

EDIT TO ADD

Special thanks to Mrs. Toad - you mentioned a formulary change as a possible reason, since it turns out that provision for insulin was not affected. Too late today, but I'll mention that to her tomorrow. That is a great call out. THANK YOU.

Trump executive order voids Biden-era order aimed at lowering prescription drug costs

By: Danielle Kreutter
Posted 8:13 PM, Jan 23, 2025
DENVER — There have been strong reactions to President Donald Trump's executive order that rescinded a Biden-era executive order aimed at lowering prescription drug costs.

Biden's order instructed the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to explore different ways to lower drug costs for Medicare and Medicaid programs. In response, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services announced a list of generic medicines that would be capped at $2.

That program was activated, and it's unclear if it ever will be now that the action has been voided by Trump. Denver7 reached out to spokespersons for the CMS and HHS, who said they are not responding to most media requests at this time.

“HHS has issued a pause on mass communications and public appearances that are not directly related to emergencies or critical to preserving health," the HHS spokesperson said in a statement. "This is a short pause to allow the new team to set up a process for review and prioritization. There are exceptions for announcements that HHS divisions believe are mission critical, but they will be made on a case-by-case basis.”

Companies are required to have a single insulin available capped at $35/month. Because the last purchase was in 2024 and formularies on 1/1/2025, my guess is that the brand she was receiving was the $35 one in 2024 - and a different one is $35 in 2025. But, unless your neighbor figures out how to get back to the insulin that costs $35, she will be paying far more than the $2000 cap on meds - since off-formulary purchases don't count toward the cap.

Trump's executive order does not change either the $2000 cap on Medicare drugs or the $35 cap on insulin. Those provisions are part of the law passed by Congress. Trump cannot undo a law by executive order.

Trump has threatened 50% tariffs on Colombia for turning back two military planes of migrants (because they were military planes and not normal commercial planes).

So your neighbors will be mad about that too. But at least a lack of coffee never killed anyone, as far as I know. Can always switch to tea for now.

People are now entering the "finding out" portion. I can't really laugh because there will be a lot of undeserved collateral damage. Some, like my dad, will not learn their lesson because, for now, my parents are fairly insulated from a lot of these things. For now.

Snip

The Inflation Reduction Act gave Medicare the power to negotiate with pharmaceutical companies for lower prices for certain prescription drugs beginning in 2026. It also caps insulin costs at $35 per month for Medicare beneficiaries and a $2,000 out-of-pocket annual cap for people enrolled in a certain drug plan.

Trump's reversal of the 2022 "Lowering Prescription Drug Costs for Americans" executive order does not necessarily impact measures in the Inflation Reduction Act.

Since Congress passed the Inflation Reduction Act, it's unclear whether Trump's executive action will have any impact on the legislation's drug price caps, according to USA TODAY.

However, experts in the pharmaceutical industry have voiced concerns that the reversal could impact drug prices by curbing research into cost-reduction models and suggests that reducing drug prices is not a priority for the Trump administration.

47. I could be a little more complicated like all medical billing.
Sun Jan 26, 2025, 04:05 PM
Jan 26

Before her passing I took care of my mothers bills including medical co-pays.

She was on insulin and other expensive blood thinners so the total was six to 8 thousand per year which made her in and out of the 'doughnut hole' and some limits even 4 years ago.

But a big one was at the beginning of the year the co-pays reset and started over. So some of what this woman may have seen was she had already paid the co-pays for last year for her December purchase and they now started over so the new price might include all the new copays. And these copays may be much much higher with changes to her medical plan and whatever Trump did by taking a meat axe to all the programs Biden had put into place.

Dems won't - we were expecting it, they weren't.

Trump is going out of his way to make America a worse place to live, he is doing it out in the open, and is proud of it.

Invoking the 25th is just days away, if there is enough backbone in the corridors of power for that to happen.

Truth be told, Repug voters thought they were safe and Trump would only hurt the others, the D voters, the brown people, the gender fluid people, the book readers, the thinkers, the 'not us' people.

Trump told his biggest lie there, he hates everyone equally, and wants to hurt everyone in America. Except his immediate family and the boot lickers.
And even they need to watch their step.

No one knows how you voted, there isn't a database with your name and how you voted a pharmacist can look up and charge different amounts for insulin based on that. (If the story is true the price has shot up.)

Wait until they repeal the ACA this year. Don't think they aren't seriously considering it. And it's not just those in the ACA market and expanded Medicaid who will suffer. Since business models for the healthcare insurance industry take into account the ACA existing, going on 15 years now, this will cause major disruptions in the market and much higher premiums for everyone. Including those of us on employer plans.

Elmo isn't smart enough to understand that Americans don't react well to pain, economic or otherwise, and tend to lash out at even minor inconveniences. Violently sometimes. There's already a good deal of pain for many Americans. To the point that a huge number of them think Luigi Mangione is a folk hero. They're sowing the wind. I hope that Dems are smart enough to harness the whirlwind. Hubris and going too far are always their downfall.

My fear as Republicans begin to make life miserable for those who voted for them - some damn Democrat will jump in and try to stop them. Don’t!!!! Only when it starts to hit them personally will they open their eyes.

All that Democrats have to say is: “Toldja’!!!”

I'm still pissed off about reverting Denali's name to Mt. McKinley. It was a long battle to get the name changed to something Alaskans already used from that of a president who had no connection to the state. It was originally named by a gold miner who was fan-girling McKinley because he signed the Gold Standard Act into law. This legislation officially established gold as the basis for the U.S. monetary system.

On the other hand, the name "Denali" comes from the Koyukon Athabascan word meaning "the high one" or "the great one." Native Alaskans have used this name for thousands of years.

I imagine Felon47 acted because he undid Obama's success at restoring the mountain's name to its original one, which honored the traditions of Alaska natives. It was a racist twofer, screwing over two people of color with one stroke of the pen.
