Farmers are concerned about RFKJR's proposed corn syrup ban.

In the farms and fields of Darke and Shelby counties in western Ohio, Donald Trump enjoys near-unfettered support. In the 5 November election, more than 80% of voters here backed the president-elect – the highest rates of any counties in Ohio.

But western Ohio is also prime corn growing ground, and with Robert F Kennedy Jr Trump’s pick to head the Department of Health and Human Services, many here may find themselves struggling if Kennedy is allowed to reshape America’s food industry to his liking.

In sharp contrast to Trump’s first administration, when Department of Agriculture officials and appointees worked closely with agriculture interests, Kennedy has vowed to ban high fructose corn syrup and seed oils, a move that would significantly reduce demand for a host of crops.

About 90m acres of land – an area larger than Greece – is used to produce corn in the US every year. About 8% of that is used to produce corn sweeteners, say experts.

Yes, high fructose corn syrup is everywhere and it's not good for us - but Trump-loving farmers might not love having it banned.

I like corn syrup but I stay as far away from HFCS as I possibly can. I always read the ingredients before buying anything.

But the voters vote their values!

I'm so damn tired of the corn farmers getting all the special benefits afforded to Iowa. Having corn mandated to my gas tank is fucked up.

Some of the corn farmers produce is made into corn syrup, and some of that is further processed to make HFCS. If HFCS is outlawed farmers who voted for Trump will lose money. That's the point; it's not about the kind of syrup we need to make caramel apples with.

many of them contradictory.

Their stance against HFCS is one of the major things that will have a negative political on Trump; he's beholden to american farmers and corn is our crop. Thread that needle.

Surprised to see that only 8% of corn is going into sugar replacement because all of the soda is corn syrup.

Unlikely that Coke and Pepsi will reformulate their flagship product using real sugar due to the cost increase.

These same Trump farmers hate ethanol mandates even though it is a corn subsidy. Ethanol seems like a likely target for DOGE since everyone except agribusiness giants hates ethanol.

In Iowa, close to 90 percent of the corn grown becomes fuel ethanol or food grain for Mexico.

Tariffs will make the Mexican farmers seek cheaper alternatives in South America.

The attacks on ethanol as fuel will kill demand on that too.

Not a lot of sympathy for people who voted for face eating leopards.

Better not be a bailout. These mooches better go work 2 or 3 jobs and pull their kids out of school to work. ....sarcasm on my part, likely plan for P2025
