Google Maps to rename 'Gulf of Mexico' to 'Gulf of America' for US users

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Google Maps will change the name of "Gulf of Mexico" to "Gulf of America" once it is officially updated in the U.S. Geographic Names System, Google said in an X post on Monday.
The change will be visible in the U.S., but the name will remain "Gulf of Mexico" in Mexico. Outside of the two countries, users will see both names on Google Maps.
The Trump administration's Interior Department said on Friday it had officially changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, and the Alaskan peak Denali, the tallest mountain in North America, to Mount McKinley.
Google Maps, which is owned by Alphabet's Google, will make a similar change with Mount McKinley.

(2,249 posts)That the US Geologic Survey publishes in their Geologic Names Information System. Trump ordered the name changed so the government USGS is changing it. Since they are changing it and Google Maps uses it as their primary source of names, Google is changing it.

(2,050 posts)Two were of interest to me.
The first I tried out was TomTom, then decided against it.
The second is Here WeGo (this is not a link. On P_lay_Store their icon looks like the letter W). I haven't tested it out while driving but it has step-by-step directions and current route information, estimated times, an on-screen mute button, and will remember your parking spot. It allows the use of downloaded maps and can save directions. There are things that are not there, but this one is worth a try, IMO.
