We initially thought it was a normal launch until we got back in our car and heard over the radio that it had exploded.

smoky trail remained up in the cold, clear blue sky all damned day. It just slowly wafted along with the breezes to remind us no matter where we went.

My family was on vacation and driving up through Florida.

I remember we were driving through Jacksonville about 2-3 hours after the explosion and could still see the residual Y-shaped contrail from over 100 miles away.

It was extremely traumatic. Our teacher was crying. I remember the quiet in the hallways. The kids were in shock.

When I crossed the street to the bank, they had rolled out the TV and they kept showing it over and over.
