the offer is "commit now to quitting in on September and you can work from home until then"
That's it.
Think. Again.

unemployment insurance (provided Trump doesn't claim their firings were for cause)

opportunity to sue for wrongful termination

(3,102 posts)I don't know where that confusion is coming from. There are 2 million people being offered this deal. The point is they want everyone working in office 5 days a week and they hope/figure this will get a small percentage of them to quit rather than return to the office full time. They expect at most 10% to take this offer. That's 200,000, not 2 million.
In reality, I expect far less than 10% to take the deal

Trump administration offering buyouts to nearly all federal workers
The Trump administration is offering millions of federal workers the option to accept buyouts through a government-wide deferred resignation program.
The offers come as President Donald Trumps administration pushes federal employees to return to the office five days per week.
The White House expects up to 10% of federal employees to take the buyout, an official told NBC News.

And the MAGA don't even have a framework for the new budget. So, there's no money for this scheme.
It was initiated by Elon Musk. I just watched a news segment that used a word for word quote comparison with the memo Twitter sent out.
It was when he did his mass layoffs (when many ultimately didn't get compensation) and the wording was exactly the same in some places. Exactly.
It's a total scam and a disgusting insult to these dedicated public servants.

(18,084 posts)Up to 12 months. I got 10 1/2 months plus another two months of WARN (federal law with mass terminations without prior notice). Fortunately I found another position within 10 weeks (70 percent of my old salary when you consider bonus). Hopefully I can get a grade bump in the next couple of years.
Federal workers should seek a better deal unless they have something else already lined up.

(4,868 posts)Its not like Trump hasnt stiffed anyone before. Ask Rudy Giuliani, Erie PA ($40k), El Paso TX ($569k), Missoula County MT ($13k), and Mesa AZ ($65k).

(54,290 posts)Federal employees also noticed that the memo announcing the buyouts was eerily similar to the one Elon Musk sent Twitter employees in 2022.https://www.facebook.com/100064806036542/posts/pfbid02x85hu9XTvyc5QoXUHk2gQ5nXfprwTVoVjn7QBraeb2H86U8u1ykGBpjA3gTFYznRl/?mibextid=Nif5oz
Elon sent the identically worded "Fork in the Road" memo in 2022 to X employees, then stiffed them. https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-buyout-offer-government-workers-elon-musk-twitter-layoff-strategy-2025-1
The lawsuits by X employees who got stiffed on their payouts by Elon are still ongoing. https://www.reuters.com/legal/litigation/most-lawsuit-over-musks-twitter-layoffs-should-proceed-us-magistrate-rules-2024-12-05/#:~:text=X%20and%20lawyers%20for%20the,lost%20their%20jobs%20in%202022.

(3,102 posts)I know Kaine called it a scam but it appeared to me he was saying if you took the offer and resigned, you would never get the 8 month payout seemingly offered.
I still haven't seen anywhere where it explicitly states that accepting the offer means you continue to telework for 8 month then you're done. In fact, after thinking about it, that doesn't even make sense because there is still a large portion of these 2 million workers who received this "offer" who have been working 5 days a week in the office all along so that would mean they are being offered nothing.
Also, the one link you had this:
I wish someone would put out a clearly worded explanation for what's going on. I don't expect that from the Trump administration. They sent out this message and it was not at all clear (whether that was intentional or unintentional is also unclear), but their purpose was I think to create panic among the workforce. I'm not sure there is anyone in the Trump administration who is capable of delivering their intended message clearly.

Less people doesn't equal more efficiency.
Are they going to replace those workers with A.I. ?

(54,290 posts)From Alt National Park Service, an underground National Park Service employee group resisting Trump's illegality:
If you didnt respond to OPMs original email asking for confirmation that you received this email with a yes, we strongly recommend doing so. Musks staff has discussed dismissing anyone who doesnt comply. For those outside our coalition who are concerned, seeking legal counsel may be advisable.
We are distributing more information directly to coalition members and have been meticulously documenting everything. More details will be released in the future. Also, rememberElon didnt pay his people at X who took the buyout.
Additional info: A follow-up memo said employees who accept the resignation offer would "promptly" have their duties reassigned or eliminated, and be placed on administrative leave.
