Kyle Cheney @kyledcheney 1hNEW: Donald Trump's pick to unravel the Jan. 6 criminal probe marched to the Capitol that day, represented several defendants in court, raised money for their defense and was a driver of the 2020 "Stop the Steal" effort.
report: https://politico.com/news/2025/01/29/ed-martin-jr-jan-6-defendants-00201269
For four years, Ed Martin Jr. has embraced the cause of Jan. 6 rioters, downplayed their violence against police and spread false claims that the far-left or government played a role in the attack on the Capitol.
Now, hes in charge of carrying out Donald Trumps order to unravel all lingering Jan. 6 cases. His name appears at the bottom of hundreds of court filings seeking to dismiss ongoing criminal cases stemming from the attack.
Trump tapped Martin who marched to the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021 but did not enter the building to implement the Justice Departments abrupt U-turn. A lawyer and longtime conservative activist, Martin helped lead an organization raising money for Jan. 6 defendants and even represented a handful of them in court. He was a prominent advocate of claims that the 2020 election was stolen from Trump and that then-Vice President Mike Pence and Congress should overturn the results on Jan. 6.
When Trump returned to the White House, he chose Martin to temporarily lead the U.S. attorneys office for the District of Columbia, which had overseen the sprawling probe and charged nearly 1,600 people for their role in the mob. Now, Martin is carrying out Trumps directive to dismiss hundreds of pending Jan. 6 cases, even against the most violent perpetrators.

WASHINGTON The Republican National Committee has hired a prominent supporter of the pro-Trump Stop the Steal movement, who has since fueled conspiracy theories about the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, to help craft its 2024 party platform.
Ed Martin, a former chair of the Missouri Republican Party, was a major proponent of former President Donald Trumps efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss. He gave a speech to Trump supporters in Washington on the eve of the Capitol attack, calling on die-hard true Americans to work until their last breath to stop the steal, according to video posted on social media.
On the morning of Jan. 6, Martin attended Trumps speech near the White House before joining the crowd in marching to the Capitol and posting about it on social media. Capitol video surveillance footage published by House Republicans shows him arriving on the grounds at around 2:20 p.m. By that time, Trumps backers had already broken through police lines and stormed the building itself in an attempt to block Congress from certifying President Joe Bidens victory.
