(55,859 posts)that the persecution required to qualify for refugee status doesn't need to be governmental or even widespread. There are many refugees globally who were victims of local gang or isolated hate crimes.
Having said that, it's ridiculous that Donnie's rolling out the red carpet for white refugees while exiling minorities even with legitimate documentation.
It's also possible that these "refugees" were simply denied a "right" to practice bigotry; as noted. I don't know the derails but don't trust Donnie and his gang of crooks.

(59,688 posts)We are not talking about a few tens of thousands, or even thousands, or even hundreds. Sixty people. That's not a wave of persecuted masses. Sixty people is a theater production, and indeed, that's just about the status I give this stunt.

I hope they are told every day that they don't belong here,
just like the RWRE tell everyone else. RWRE = right wing religious extremists.

(3,944 posts)They are being murdered along with their black farmer counterparts. Robbery being the motive, not racial or political. It just so happens that white farmers are wealthier than black farmers, so get hit perhaps proportionately more. But black farmers are murdered too. Will Trump roll out the red carpet for them too? Doubtful. Because this is about politicizing a South-Africa wide problem of crime to paint a false picture of white persecution. Feeds into the far-right Nazi conspiracy theory of white genocide and replacement. Tailor-made for Trump and his clowns.
Throw in the demonization of South Africa for its stand against apartheid and genocide - and its a total win for Trump and his pal Netanyahu.

But despite numerous claims in the past of the systematic targeting of the country's white Afrikaner minority group, local crime statistics figures paint a different picture.
South Africa does not release crime figures based on race but the latest figures revealed that 6,953 people were murdered in the country between October and December 2024.
Of these, 12 were killed in farm attacks. Of the 12, one was a farmer, while five were farm dwellers and four were employees, who are likely to have been black.
In contrast, 961 women were murdered alongside 273 children.

(7,535 posts)After decades of resistance led by figures like Nelson Mandela and the African National Congress, combined with international pressure and sanctions, apartheid ended in the early 1990s, culminating in South Africas first democratic elections in 1994. But while policies can be subject to swift changes, their historical impacts are another story.

Similar thinking could be applied to the massive concentration of wealth in the US in the hands of the top 1%.

(3,944 posts)As is the concept of the long arc of justice.
However, just a caution about the "confiscations". Apparently, at least according to the SA government, there have been no confiscations under the new law. It's a false claim being used as a rationale by Trump.

(5,086 posts)and take all the mineral wealth for themselves. They liked that wealth and power so much they fought a few wars so they could take over the whole country and run everything. There was so much wealth, they even fought with other white people over who got to control it. They set up a system where not only did they get all the wealth and power, they lived separately from the people they were oppressing and impoverishing and barely even needed to see them on a day to day basis unless they had hired them to work in their mansion or on their farms or in their mines.
But one day all the black people rose up and said this is our country and our wealth and there are a lot more of us than there are of you so we should get to control political power too. And while they were pretty angry at the white people, they didn't kill them all off so that left the problem of what to do about them. They decided to let them leave if they wanted to. They planned over 40 years to buy back land stolen by white families and give it to black families.
The white people didn't like this because they felt like they weren't getting enough money for the land they stole and they didn't like having to share power and that the majority of the people in the country got to decide about things like redistribution of wealth and affirmative action. To top it all off, a lot of the mines that they had move there to exploit were tapped out and not making so much money anymore.
As the 2030 deadline loomed, 40 years after the end of apartheid, they said "who will deliver us to a country where we don't have to be governed by people with a different skin colour to ours". And lo and behold, a billionaire appeared on a white Cybertruck to say "come live in America, where you may not be as rich but at least you can still be openly racist".
And all the white people jumped at the opportunity to continue pretending that they were the victims in a world devoid of historical context. And when they moved to America they found hundreds of thousands of new friends who all believed the same thing.
The End.

(5,086 posts)including working with post-Settlement Governance Entities on investment and development of land and funds they were given as essentially reparations. So in a way, yes.

(70,471 posts)The Republican Party now holds a 15 percentage point advantage among White voters: 56% of non-Hispanic White voters identify with or lean toward the Republican Party, while 41% align with the Democratic Party.
That 15% difference is just about the total of all minority voters, R or D., of whom certain minorities, Hispanic and Indian vote heavily Republican. About 40% of the Hispanic vote went to Trump.
I don't think playing a racial strategy is a good plan for us. Otherwise why vote? Just give a candidate votes based on the political/racial make up of a district.
