The world is more divided than ever, but theres still something (nearly) everyone agrees on: The U.S. is unloved.
The United States is becoming less popular globally in the aftermath of Donald Trumps return to the White House, according to new data.
The 2025 Democracy Perception Index summarizes attitudes toward democracy, geopolitics and global power players, and canvassed more than 110,000 respondents across 100 countries.
A majority of people surveyed had an overall negative perception of the U.S., marking a steep decline from last year. Americas reputation took a particularly massive hit in EU countries perhaps unsurprisingly, as U.S. President Donald Trump has called the bloc horrible, pathetic and formed to screw the United States.
Anders Fogh Rasmussen, former NATO chief and founder of the Alliance of Democracies Foundation that coauthored the index, said he was not surprised that perceptions of the United States have fallen so sharply.
Meanwhile, China kept improving its global standing, overtaking the U.S. for the first time and recording mostly positive perceptions in all regions except Europe. Russia, the reputation of which tanked in the wake of President Vladimir Putins full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, is still (slightly) more unpopular than the U.S. though its image is also improving.
Trumps reputation is in line with that of his country. The survey showed hes less popular worldwide than his Russian and Chinese counterparts, Putin and Xi Jinping.
Trump recorded the worst score among a range of political, cultural and spiritual leaders that includes X owner Elon Musk, Microsoft founder Bill Gates, the late Pope Francis, Taylor Swift and Kim Kardashian.

It's like they are cultivating soul corruption for themselves and others.

(26,679 posts)It said Sorry about our President in several different languages. Last year before he was installed by the muskrat I was going to throw it away. But I held on to it until after the election. I plan on wearing it if I ever go overseas again. But sadly I am afraid of flying and traveling internationally because I might have my devices taken upon re entering the US. So international travel is only a dream for me now!

-in the top 3% on the economy
-in the top 10% on free speech
-in the top 20% on globalization
-in the top 23% on press freedom
-in the top 12 on technology
-and in the top 11% on standards of living.
With numbers like that there is no way other people and countries hate us. Just no way.

But to watch that corrupt, ignorant, narcissist destroy everything he touched in his first term culminating in a violent attack on democracy itself and realize that not only was he not going to suffer any consequences, he was going to get a second chance at the presidencythat had to be the final straw for the global perception of the U.S.
