"America will have a domestic shoe industry when Americans decide to pay more for shoes."

(15,030 posts)But they do make shoes here in the US, as well as selling classic work and specialty shoe brands in their brick and mortar stores.
Tariffs will hit them pretty hard, along with other shoe manufacturers
On edit, along with New Balance, which does have a made in USA line.
It's not that hard to find clothing manufacturers that are Made in the US. Or to find the cloth or yarn/thread to make that clothing that was manufactured here. The only real issue is the cost.

(1,251 posts)I've been wearing them for at least a decade at this point. It's a really quality shoe, and better than a couple of other New balance types I tried.
All IMHO.

(52,869 posts)They run between $500 and $700, and they take as much as seven months to make.

(25,291 posts)It does cost more, but the mark up on shoes is insane.

(614 posts)are things that we just don't do very well and that other countries have developed workforces to do over many decades. It is more than just a matter of every thing is equal but labor costs are lower. China and other countries have developed close-knit supply chains, factories in the same localities, shipping infrastructure, and a workforce skilled in the very type of work that it takes to produce these goods over many many years. America has not; and likely will not. Shifting production to America would be a much more mechanized proposition which would make an American shoe industry far less able to respond to the demands of shoe makers to make limited production runs for testing and sampling--something China and Vietnam are very good at it.
There are many realities that are being ignored by the Administration as it levies these tariffs, but when has reality been a barrier for F-47?
