'Horrific act': Russia responsible for downing of MH17, UN aviation body rules

The United Nations’ top aviation authority has formally found the Russian Federation responsible for the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 over eastern Ukraine in 2014, marking a landmark ruling in a case brought by Australia and the Netherlands.

The Council of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) ruled on Monday that Russia violated international aviation law under the Chicago Convention, siding with Australia and the Netherlands, which jointly launched proceedings against Moscow in 2022.

MH17 was en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur on July 17, 2014, when it was shot down over separatist-held territory in eastern Ukraine, killing all 298 people on board, including 38 Australian citizens and residents. Investigations have since concluded the aircraft was brought down by a Russian-made Buk surface-to-air missile.

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong welcomed the finding, describing it as “a historic moment in the pursuit of truth, justice and accountability for the victims of the downing of Flight MH17, and their families and loved ones”.

and bloviated about the massacre and crimes against humanity. Being Russian is it's own punishment. Not sure what else we can do to them.

....
In The Hague in 2022, in absentia, Girkin was found guilty of the murder of 298 people: the passengers and crew of Malaysian Airlines flight MH17.

The Boeing jet had been shot down over eastern Ukraine in 2014 by Russian-controlled forces in the early stages of Russia's war there.

Girkin was one of three men sentenced to life imprisonment. A judgement he ignored.

"I am a military man and I am not going to accept that a civilian court in a foreign country has the authority to convict a person who took part in someone else's civil war, only because their civilians were killed.
...
The Dutch court would later rule that Russia had been in control of the separatist forces fighting in eastern Ukraine and that Girkin had helped to bring the Buk missile system into Ukraine that was used to shoot down flight MH17.

MH17 verdict: Three pro-Russian troops convicted of murder over deaths of 298 people
All 283 passengers and 15 crew members were killed when the Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 was shot down over eastern Ukraine by Russia-backed separatists.

Russians Igor Girkin and Sergey Dubinskiy, and Ukrainian national Leonid Kharchenko, were found guilty of 298 counts of murder and "unlawfully causing an airplane to crash" by the Hague District Court at Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam. They were sentenced to life imprisonment.

Fourth defendant Oleg Pulatov was acquitted after the court found he had no prior knowledge of the plan to fire the missile. Nor did he have the authority to overrule Dubinskiy's order to find the missile, the court stated.
...
Russia denied all responsibility, but the Dutch government holds Moscow responsible. Ukraine's then-president Petro Poroshenko described the incident as "an act of terrorism".
...
As the four men were not considered combatants, with the DPR is technically a non-state actor, the four were not entitled to the immunity offered to soldiers at war.

Shall we talk about "dehumanization"?

Perhaps we can start with #MH17 passenger jet which was shot down by Russian forces over Ukraine in 2014, killing 298 innocent people.

Russian forces looted the bags of dead passengers while their phones rang

Eight years ago today, flight #MH17 was shot down over south eastern Ukraine. The order was given by Russian military intelligence officer Igor Strelkov (Girkin)

His forces looted the bodies and belongings moments after the plane crashed into a cornfield

Both tweets include a video clip from News Corp Australia showing images of the debris of the aftermath with many dead bodies pixellated and troops ransacking personal belongings.

We are still waiting for justice for the Cubana bombing 1976 - a family friend on her way to medical school was among the victims.
