Three Yale professors who have written extensively on authoritarianism are leaving the U.S.

“We’re like people on the Titanic saying our ship can’t sink,” Marci Shore said. “And what you know as a historian is that there is no such thing as a ship that can’t sink.”

Lol using the Titanic as a metaphor for what they're doing is...maybe not the comparison she was going for. WhiskeyGrinder May 2025 #2
Also Shore and Snyder had been thinking about moving to Canada to years, apparently. WhiskeyGrinder May 2025 #4

From the comments:

I feel a lot of guilt about leaving the States – despite the fact that the offers from the Munk School had been percolating for several years and it’s most likely we would have accepted them even if Kamala Harris had won. We’d come to Toronto on a sabbatical year in August 2024 and were already living here during the November elections.

ICE is the new Gestapo and people aren't as alarmed as they should be because they think, "Oh, they're not coming after us, it's just immigrants who are violent criminals being treated this way." Only that's not true, they're treating all immigrants this way, some who are here completely legally or who are US citizens. And mark my words, ICE will be rounding up regular Americans who the adminstration deems political foes soon. We are fast approaching when ICE isn't just someone immigrants need to worry about, but something the whole country will need to fear.

We're coming to a time when something you post on Facebook could get you abducted by masked men in trucks and sent to a prison somewhere out of the country. No charges, no trial, just disappeared.
