Andrew Cuomo Has Unmasked Himself as a Full-Blown Trumpist

The disgraced former governor is repeatedly proving just how similar he is to the disgraced current president.

Former New York governor and currently flailing New York City mayoral candidate Andrew Cuomo is the latest politician to fall prey to the curse of the wealthy donor dinner. But unlike his predecessors, his gaffe is not about voters. It’s about himself. Politico reports that at a Hamptons fundraiser last Saturday, Cuomo told his well-heeled supporters that, contrary to all available evidence, he could win the New York mayoral race as an independent—because he was likely to have the implicit support of President Donald Trump.

These words were very clearly directed to what Politico describes as a “Trump-friendly” crowd of rich guests. Undergirding Cuomo’s comments was the conviction that the overriding goal of the election is vanquishing Zohran Mamdani, who defeated Cuomo in June to become the Democratic Party’s official candidate. The imperative of defeating Mamdani justified the new coalition Cuomo is trying to create of his die-hard loyalists (who are Democrats) with Trump Republicans.

Some of that latter group might be tempted to back Curtis Sliwa, the actual GOP nominee in the race. But Cuomo had an answer for them—and it was all about Trump. Cuomo told these donors, “We can minimize [the Sliwa] vote, because he’ll never be a serious candidate. And Trump himself, as well as top Republicans, will say the goal is to stop Mamdani. And you’ll be wasting your vote on Sliwa.” Cuomo went on to emphasize that he’d be a mayor who could find common ground with Trump:

This statement is all the more remarkable because Cuomo’s big selling point in the Democratic primary was the spurious claim that he was a tough guy who could stand up to Trump like no other. Mamdani naturally seized on the Politico report to discredit Cuomo.

... this is moot, of course:
1. He'll never take the primary.
2. I don't live in NYC.

What we were discussing is his alleged "Trumpyness", and I was giving my opinion on why he would do that. I never made any comment on the NYC primary past speculation on his campaign"strategy", of which (of course) I have no insight what-so-ever.

I just found it an odd comparison, whether Cuomo is better than the Republican. The primary is over, Cuomo lost, but he is still in the race. The critical issues at hand are:

Will Democrats choose Cuomo over the Democrat?
Will Trumpers choose Cuomo over the Republican?

If enough of either is true, Mamdani could lose.

i understand that neither you nor I will be voting in this race, but if our party leaders are deserting the Democrat in favor of Cuomo, that is our business.

Or does he hold his rich donors in such low regard that he thinks they're that stupid?

Cuomo needs to accept reality and consider extended care help.

A lot of people would have remembered him for doing a good job during COVID, even though many of us weren't about to overlook the sexual harassment issues (and the very poor way he handled them). He could have retired to the Hamptons and had a good life.

But this.... he's really digging himself a BAD legacy.

During the 2024 election his brother was carrying the water for Trump and even said on air he called Trump on the phone in the middle of a Presidential election. I knew Chris Cuomo was in the tank for Trump and Andrew wouldn't be in different. Should also be pointed out both Andrew and Chris were against Trump being prosecuted for his crimes in New York. So whoever seriously thought Andrew Cuomo would stand up to Trump is delusional. Also what is a news anchor doing having casual conversations with former Presidents and Presidential candidates like Trump?
