Unfortunately, Bluesky is unavailable in Mississippi right now, due to a new state law that requires age verification for all users.

While intended for child safety, we think this law poses broader challenges & creates significant barriers that limit free speech & harm smaller platforms like ours.

It's not just annoying when we have a first Amendment right. It's in your face unconstitutional with a fascist Supreme Court in place.

Some have taken the Bluesky approach where they just block the website overall because they openly admit it's not smart to have people upload their ID or whatever to prove their age. So, you just lose access.

(5,239 posts)So they have your credit card linked to your browsing history. I'm sure that a lot of people can't, or refuse, to see where this is going. But when the economy tanks and unemployment skyrockets, and employers want good Christian employees, they will be able to buy their employees' browsing histories, or even call their local office of Morality to find out if they have any lgbtq+ employees. And there will no longer be any protection against discrimination for those employees. People will probably say that this is paranoid speculation. Tell that to people who haven't lived through the fear of every day worrying that your employer would find out that you were gay and that there was nothing to protect your job.

(4,392 posts)The website, or application, voluntarily blocks the content from users whose IP address implies that their computer is located within the state.
Just as a car doesn't limit your speed to 25mph, or 65mph you are expected to comply with law. A similar paradigm is at work for the publishers of certain content. The State is perfectly content to prosecute you for speeding, or for making the content available, but cannot actually stop either speeding or access to prohibited content.

This law really foments chaos. If you think about it shuts down 70% of the internet for a majority of users. There's no way this protects children.
One kid commits suicide in MS and they virtually ban the internet. 30,000-plus people die each year by gun violence, and they do nothing.
If anyone thinks Republicans aren't depraved, they're not paying attention.

(66 posts)The question is whether they dare Mississippi to fine 'em. Bluesky is preventively blocking it there to comply with the law as they don't want to risk the fines. Twitter might not care. Facebook might not care. Or they're waiting to see how this plays out.
