●He develops a severe case of dysphagia because of neurological deterioration.
●He becomes unable to manage his saliva as a result of the loss of a reflexive swallow.
●He subsequently silently aspirates food, liquid, and his own oral secretions.
●He develops aspiration pneumonia.
●He begins to drown in his own secretions because he no longer has a reflexive cough.
●He eventually dies.
This is how those with advanced dementia usually die.
It's not pretty, and it's very unpleasant for everyone involved.
Family members often insist on trying to give food and drink to these patients, not understanding their actions are creating harm. In effect, it's like choking them to death.
They object to the necessary withholding of food by mouth because they perceive it as starving them. The end is near. It's hard for the family.
Some insist on tube feeding. Also prone to aspiration and just prolongs the inevitable while also causing harm.
The process is extremely torturous for the patients.
The likely outcomes are starving to death or dying from aspiration pneumonia.
A pneumonia which is the equivalent of drowning without any of the body's protective reflexes working to prevent death.
The wasting away often results in a person with a body in an almost completely unrecognizable form.
It's a death that usually comes very slowly.
With advanced dementia that's his best case scenario.
