A handful of Senate Democrats on Sunday indicated they are ready to advance a package of bills that could end the government shutdown, multiple sources told Axios.
Why it matters: It is the most significant movement toward a bipartisan breakthrough in the talks to reopen the government in over a month.
At least 10 Senate Democrats are expected to support a procedural motion to advance a package of spending bills and a short term funding measure through the end of January, multiple sources from both parties told Axios.
The deal would include a December vote on a Democratic proposal to extend ACA tax credits for one year, multiple sources said. It would take 60 votes to pass.
It could also include some kind of language to help federal workers who have been laid off under the shutdown.

What's for certain is that any Democrat who votes to cave now and betray the base in exchange for nothing at all will live to regret it.

I can also see why some Democrats really do want to re-open government, as their constituents are suffering. But I hope this is BS.

I will support a primary for Schumer I think AOC could beat him. I will donate. Democrats need to stop caving. This empowers Trump and folks wont believe Democrats anymore.

(52,585 posts)House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said Sunday that House Democrats would be unlikely to support a promise to vote on extension of health insurance tax credits as part of a deal to reopen the government. Senate Majority Leader John Thune has offered to hold a vote on a pre-determined date, and the idea has been part of bipartisan talks in the Senate aimed at finding an offramp to end the shutdown.
"I don't think that the House Democratic caucus is prepared to support a promise, a wing and a prayer, from folks who have been devastating the health care of the American people for years," Jeffries said on NBC's "Meet the Press."
Jeffries outlined his support for a one-year extension of the tax credits, which Senate Democrats proposed Friday in exchange for reopening the government. Jeffries had previously opposed the idea, but said Sunday that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer's proposal was "was offered in good faith," while noting that it "provides a path toward bipartisan negotiations for a multi-year extension."
senseandsensibility
(24,205 posts)not the House. They've been in session all day today and things are moving fast, apparently. If you believe Claire McCaskill on MSNBC, there are 10 Dems willing to vote for reopening the govt with only a promise to vote on the ACA extensions.

What about the House? A vote is nothing it takes five minutes for the republicans to vote it done that is no deal it's a surrender.

(3,144 posts)Doing this would be a horrible mistake. Personally I think it's b.s. they should need 60 votes anyway. Republicans never needed 60 votes when they tried to repeal the affordable health care act or when they gutted medicaid while giving massive tax breaks to the ultra wealthy. They did it all under reconciliation so they can find a way to extend the ACA subsidies under reconciliation too.
If Democrats do this they will get absolutely nothing out of it.

(16,912 posts)If the Dems have come THIS far, then they need to see it through all the way. No fake promises from Republicans without ironclad issues written in stone. if the Dems have not learned YET that Republicans lie, cheat and steal, then they are never going to learn that concept.
Hoping this is NOT true, but my comment holds regardless. Democrats need to stick to their guns.
