On Christmas Day, My Wife and I Watched "The American President."

It's a Rob Reiner movie, for one thing, and it dates back to 1995, when things seemed a lot simpler. It's also a Christmas Movie, which added to its appeal.

I hadn't seen it since it first hit the theaters, so it seemed pretty fresh to me again.

What a rare thing: A romantic comedy and a political movie rolled into one. Thank you Rob Reiner! We miss you.

What struck me the most, though, was the political tone it took. It was set in a time when politics were still rational to a large degree. Would that it were so today.

It ended well, but it's a romantic comedy, so of course it did. But, we could have a movie that put romance and politics on the same level. Again, would that it were still so today.

If you want to watch a Rob Reiner movie, I recommend it. You'll enjoy it, I'm certain.

I've watched it many, many times.

I call this movie, Downton Abbey, and The West Wing my mental comfort food - I watch them when I need to feel good.

I'll have to give it a re-watch. Was Michael J. Fox in this movie? I can't remember.

And a superb warm-up for his television series "The West Wing", starring TAP supporting actor, Martin Sheen.

An entire nation riveted by OJ Simpson and Monica Lewinsky (and her co-stars, Linda Tripp, and Ken Starr).

Yet, somehow, generally a time of decent economics and relative peace.

However, you can go back to "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" for another example of the romantic comedy/political story. From 1939, it also gets down to the last minute speech that turns the table. Also a naive movie, but also a heartwarming fantasy about what it should be like.
