Shutdown is to wake the American people up. Let them know some powers such as tariffs and war powers must return to Congress as required by the Constitution.

Another thing Republicans don’t care about.

The government being shutdown isn’t a failure for them, it’s a victory in itself.

Whether you keep the government shut for a week or a year.

Back pay is great, but it doesn’t stop them from defaulting on their credit cards and mortgages.

It comes down to how long you are willing to abuse federal workers, without there being any possibility of a policy victory. To me it is just pure cruelty, there is no point.

It’s as stupid as when Ted Cruz shutdown the government to “kill Obamacare”

Not nearly as cruel as allowing government to kill citizens in broad daylight and strip away our Constitutional rights. Without those, everything u mentioned will be gone anyway.

Because that’s all that will happen, before the government is reopened with zero policy concessions.

There’s a reason Ted Cruz liked the strategy of shutting down the government so much, it’s because he’s fucking stupid.

They need to be opposed just like Rove, Cheney and Rumsfeld made it so the GOP opposed all we tried to do in lockstep. Every time we ever try to do some bipartisan thing, they don't agree unless they get their way anyway.

Over the last 30 years our political dialog has moved so far to the right, by design, that a centrist position in 2025 would be considered reactionary back in 1970 or even 1980. We have to STOP these people before it is too late and that window is closing rapidly. Time to grind everything to a halt and just stop it all until some concessions can be wrung from these corrupt politicians and their billionaire/Wall Street greed-lizard owners.

you'll call them Capitulators, too. I mean, if you're still on DU then.

Other DUers are calling for a General Strike. They're going to be disappointed - half this nation wants to see protesting Liberals cut down by automatic gunfire. They won't strike.

Last shutdown, ICE was considered essential and still paid.
The GOP will not cave, they are perfectly happy to let the economy crash and people lose jobs while they keep paying their goons and spreading mayhem.

Most of the stuff the government is doing now is widly unpopular, yet they don't care and do it. Why would a shutdown pressure the gop ?

I don't think the country is ready for Shutdown II. They would probably really blame Dems this time, as some probably haven't recovered financially yet from the last one.

Come up with another way to make the point.

For those paying attention, these abuses ARE popular. Not surprising coming from group voted for felon and rapist. The point of shutdown is to wake those up who are NOT paying attention.

What Continues (ICE):
Enforcement & Removals: Arrests, raids, and deportations continue as normal.
Detention Operations: The system for detaining immigrants remains active.
SEVP: The program that manages international students (F-1/M-1) is funded by fees and stays open.

What Slows Down/Stops (Immigration System):
Immigration Courts (EOIR): Hearings for non-detained individuals often get postponed, creating backlogs, even if courts technically stay open.
E-Verify: The system for employers to verify work eligibility can be temporarily unavailable, suspending deadlines for new cases.
USCIS (Sometimes): While fee-funded USCIS generally stays open, processing of some non-fee-based immigration petitions can pause.

In essence, ICE's core mission of enforcement carries on, but the court system that processes cases gets backed up, leading to uncertainty for many immigrants.

You're seeing this all wrong.

The ACA got extended like the Dems wanted. Again, shutting down is the ONLY power Dems have left and it must be used to wake up all Americans, including those on SNAP, etc. We can rebuild a crashed economy. It's much easier than getting boots off our necks.

They have not yet even put forth a bill that funds ICE because of this. But the con artist unfortunately already has $170 Billion he can pump into ICE over the next four years.

Because of the public outrage there are serious conversations happening as to how ICE can be reined in. With the public siding with the Democrats hopefully there will be some retraints put on ICE. Along with this we need the Democrats to retake control of the House and lesson the Republican majority in the Senate in 2026.
