https://www.sfchronicle.com/opinion/openforum/article/iran-government-war-tehran-21958078.phpIf you see people in Tehran or San Francisco dancing to news of Iran being bombed, do not misunderstand what you are witnessing. Many are terrified because their parents, siblings and relatives remain in Iran and could be caught in the crossfire. The celebration is not about war itself. For some, it reflects the belief that a long-awaited end may finally be approaching the possible collapse of a system they believe has brought decades of repression and suffering.
Neither Israel nor the United States acts without its own strategic interests. Iranians know this. But after decades of exhausted peaceful options, some people have begun to calculate risk differently. As one friend told me recently, No one wants bombs falling on our country. But people are fed up. They have tried everything else.
The jubilant Iranians shown on U.S. newscasts are not cheering war. They are acknowledging a grim reality: The alternative path, which is already known, means more repression and more suffering.

(4,184 posts)1. They think this will end their repression and suffering?
My heart goes out to them, though not as much as to the Iranians running from bombs or choking on toxic black air from burning oil depots in their capital city.
However I am afraid they are very much deluded.

(3,193 posts)3. I'm hearing entirely too many stories similar to this one...
Apparently, approximately 80% of Iran's population has hit the end of their tolerance for their theocratic regime. What they're willing to do to effect change though is a question none of us outside the country can answer. For this reason, I'll hold judgement on whether these people are "deluded."

The fuckheads are coming for California and they'll make an attempt to flip in this election. Hopefully it will backfire on them big time.
