Trump says he blames Iran for bombing their own school "Because I just don't know enough about it."

CNN’s chief congressional correspondent Manu Raju asked Trump directly about mounting evidence that an American Tomahawk cruise missile destroyed the Shajareh Tayyebeh girls’ school in Minab on February 28, the first day of the war. At least 175 people were killed, most of them children. According to the New York Times, video analysis and satellite imagery showed the school was hit in a precision strike nearly simultaneous with U.S. strikes on the adjacent Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps naval base. According to the Associated Press, a U.S. official familiar with internal deliberations confirmed the strike was likely American. The independent research group Bellingcat verified footage showing a munition consistent with a Tomahawk cruise missile — a weapon manufactured solely by Raytheon that the U.S. military has never sold to Iran.

Trump’s response was to claim Iran “also has some Tomahawks.” He called the missile “very generic.” He said it was “sold and used by other countries.” Every one of those claims is false. According to the Australian Department of Defense, only the U.S., U.K., and Australia possess Tomahawk cruise missiles. The U.S. approved sales to Japan and the Netherlands in recent years. Iran is not on that list and has never been. The Joint Chiefs chairman, General Dan Caine, said himself at a Pentagon briefing the week the war started: “The first shooters at sea were Tomahawks unleashed by the United States Navy.”

Then New York Times White House correspondent Shawn McCreesh pressed him. His question was precise: “You just suggested that Iran got its hands on a Tomahawk and bombed its own elementary school on the first day of the war. You’re the only person in your government saying this. Even your defense secretary wouldn’t say that when he was asked, standing over your shoulder on your plane on Saturday. Why are you the only person saying this?”

Trump’s answer: “Because I just don’t know enough about it.”
