I've been dreading having to write this post since yesterday.

I feel physically ill trying to get the words out. My heart hurts.

My brother, DU's Texas Towelie, passed away yesterday.

Decades ago my parents tasked me with looking after my younger brother. One sibling was 1500 miles away. Another was out of the country. And the other was too stressed all of the time to participate. He was my brother, and I wouldn't let them down. My younger brother was intelligent and bipolar. He was well-educated, but never had money, even with a good paying job. He had some problems with decision-making. He grew up with us in a horrible small town in south Texas with rattlesnakes, javelinas, cowboys, and bullies. I can't imagine how rough it was for him. He was more suited for a genteel life.

Paul (Towelie) had several chronic health problems for decades that finally caught up with him. I think he was dreading what could have come next. He passed away overnight on May 14. He was living with our brother in Texas who had PTSD from the Gulf War. Neither would be easy to live with, but I couldn't convince Towelie to leave Texas when he could like I did when I moved to Georgia.

Over the years I have sought out Paul's posts to keep an eye on him, trying to assess his emotional state after several suicide attempts. I also looked for his absence from DU as it might have meant he was hospitalized and our brother forgot to tell me. Over these decades I was married with a traveling husband, a severely autistic teen son, and a MIL with dementia. I couldn't do everything from 1000 miles away and people here depending on my help. I think he might have figured out "Ilsa" was his sis, but I hope he's forgiven me for not being upfront about it. If he was angry for me trying to look out for him, I can live with that. Paul and I have always been more alike in our interests and politics.

A few years before he joined DU, I invited him here, hoping he could make friends here and find purpose. I think he took his time and found you on his own. I'm so glad he made friends with so many of you. I know he appreciated every kind word you had for him, as do I. Please forgive me for my deception.

My heart aches for him, that he had so many physical and emotional problems over the years, and endured so much suffering.

I need to go mourn for my beloved brother. I've been doing a lot of that over the last 3½ years having lost my husband, my MIL afterwards, my dog, my son's caregiver after 2 years, and about 4 or 5 aunts and uncles. I'll try to answer questions if you have any.

Texas Towelie was (oh, that past tense hurts) a real fixture here--constantly scouring news and Youtube sites for important news and videos to keep us all up to date. I hate that I may not have fully given him his due for all that he did do on this site but I know his efforts were appreciated.

I admire the efforts you took to try to keep tabs on him, despite your overwhelming responsibilities. That would have been impressive for a team of people, but you, alone? Heavens, Ilsa. My hat and heart go out to you.

We will miss Texas Towelie a great deal. I hope it won't be too painful to remain with us despite his loss. We are your family too.

and know how difficult it is. Like you I moved away, and as with your brother there were issues (very smart but addiction issues). I am actually living in Texas and had to take care of probate in Florida. My brother did manage to keep himself fairly well together and had a good job, but in the end, addiction won out. Three months later our ill mother also passed away. I have a younger sister who helped on my mom's end and that was a tremendous gift. I want you to know that my pm is open if you ever need to talk. and to learn of how difficult the past few years have been for him and for you. It reminds me that we never really know what our fellow DUers may be struggling with at any given time. Paul was helpful and generous with his time here and was obviously well regarded and appreciated. I hope that you will find some comfort, respite, and better days ahead. You deserve the peace and joy that I pray will come your way after so much sadness.

I grew up in Central Texas and interacted with Texas Towelie on many Texas posts.

I had a few years from 2016-2018 where I had to be a long-distance caregiver and deal with multiple losses. Those were the hardest years of my life so far.

As you mourn, I hope you can also find ways to take care of yourself.

TT was a stalwart DUer, a voluminous poster and his work covered ground that most of us here did not address. He had an incisive focus on state- and (often) metro-level and municipal issues with potential for far wider impact on all of us.

And your recounting of his life serves to remind me how incredibly lucky I am for the life I've led. I'm from a small town, one with its share of cowboys and bullies and inbred fundamentalists, but (I'd imagine) nothing as sour and crooked as what you and Paul knew.

With thanks from all of us to Paul and to you for all you've done,

He was just such a nice guy. Always kind and never minded exhaling things to others. Yet when it came to him he always downplayed the seriousness of a situation.

I remember when he lost his foot way back on '20. I didn't know what was going on and he wasn't answering my messages and I was freaking out. He came back extremely calm and told me his foot had been amputated and he was still running a low grade fever so he was behind on figuring it out. Calm as can be. His freaking foot had been amputated and he was talking about how there was going to be a learning curve. I kid you not.

No longer mourn for me when I am dead
Than you shall hear the surly sullen bell
Give warning to the world that I am fled
From this vile world with vilest worms to dwell;
Nay, if you read this line, remember not
The hand that writ it; for I love you so,
That I in your sweet thoughts would be forgot,
If thinking on me then should make you woe.
O, if (I say) you look upon this verse,
When I (perhaps) compounded am with clay,
Do not so much as my poor name rehearse,
But let your love even with my life decay,
Lest the wise world should look into your moan,
And mock you with me after I am gone.

No need to apologize for anything. You looked after your brother with love and you followed your mother's wishes.

We grew about 30 miles from Beeville. Our first house was on the edge of town. We had a rattlesnake in our backyard close to the house. Our dad was going to kill it with a hoe. When he saw the size of it, he got his shotgun. If that thing had gotten into the house...

Yeah, he was whip-smart, especially in math. He won state UIL awards (like first place) in various math and related subjects.

205. Paul and I had discussed South Texas
Sat May 16, 2026, 12:00 PM

My mom and father grew up in the Rio Grande Valley (Mission and Donna). We lived in Corpus Christie for a couple of years. We moved to Florida for a couple of years. After my father died, we moved back to Mission when I was in 5th grade.. Paul and I discussed South Texas and he knew the high school I went to. In high school, we went up to Corpus for speech and debate tournaments and to Kingsville for UIL regionals. I remember going to the Premont debate tournament once. . In college, one of the members of the debate squad was from Corpus and we went down to judge debate tournaments.

South Texas was interesting. I still remember my cat killing and bringing a rabbit to our back porch. I saw a few rattlesnakes and cotton mouths over the years when I was in scouting.

Paul was a great man and was a major contributor to DU. Paul was a great democrat and I know that he joined me in hoping to see Texas turn blue. I know that he had a number of physical ailments and I worried about him. I am so sorry for your loss. Paul will be missed.

Thank you for alerting us to Paul’s death.

This detailed post.

I did not know the difficulties he faced.

All I knew was that he found us the necessary and relevant news and he did so regularly and dependably.

He will be missed.

I know I am not alone in saying I am grateful for all he did.

I am sure it was even harder to post than it was to read.
TT was one of my very favorite posters. He was one of the people I relied on for Texas news.

I am so sorry for your struggles, too. You have had so much to cope with. I'm sending good thoughts your way and hoping that very soon you will have happier times. Meanwhile, find people to help you carry your burdens and don't forget to be kind to yourself.

RIP Texas Towelie. You touched many lives, and you will definitely be missed.

Texas Towelie has been a great poster here. I liked his perspective and commitment to DU.

We have lost a stalwart but you have lost a dear brother and I am so sorry. His struggle is over and I wish you peace with that.

I think the first time I came across him was an early term in MIRT, and I had a lot.of.time for him and how nice and calm he was.

My thoughts go out to you and your family.

I can’t remember how it came about exactly, but I went to see him in the hospital here a few times. He looked very frail even then and that was a couple of years ago. He and I visited a good while and talked politics—he was definitely a good Democrat. He was a very proud man, even though he was in a wheelchair, he was proud to be independent in transfers and could even make it down the stairs of his apartment building. I still have no idea how he did that, but he said he did. He actually rode that wheelchair to the HEB—a good mile or more from his house, and never accepted a ride from me. I would have been so happy to tote him wherever he needed to go, but he never asked and though I offered, I wasn’t going to push my help on him. All of this is to say, I’m not surprised he didn’t take you up on your offers to help.

I am sorry to hear that he has passed.. I know I won’t be the only one to miss his posts. I am sorry you have had sooo much grief to deal with the last few years. I am sending healing vibes that your broken heart mends quickly and is filled with happier memories.

care of yourself while you mourn the loss of your dear, dear brother. My husband passed 7 months to the day of Paul. I have found it so helpful and comforting to talk to him, to really talk to him. I find a quiet place, clear my head and then talk to him.
DM me if you ever want to talk about what helped and still helps me with my grief.

I will miss his posts in the LGBT group. He liked to post there.

It is always difficult to hear news like this and figure out a way to respond that doesn't sound canned or dismissive of the pain you are feeling. As evidenced in this thread, he touched many lives here in a positive way and his passing is felt throughout the veins of DU.

May his memories be a blessing.

to read. I am so saddened to hear of his passing and also of the difficulties he had in his life. I lived in Austin for a few years, and it was truly a little blue dot in a crimson-red ocean that could be extremely cruel to anyone who dared not to conform. I don't know where in Texas your brother lived, but I hope he found some community in his community and I am so glad that you introduced him to DU.
