ME-02: Despite national stakes, 2nd District Democrats struggle to gain an edge

Maine’s 2nd congressional district is all but guaranteed to be the focus of national attention in November, as both Democrats and Republicans fight for control of the U.S. Senate and House of Republicans.

The stakes have only gotten higher since the tight 2024 election for the seat: former Gov. Paul LePage is the Republican nominee, and incumbent Democrat U.S. Rep. Jared Golden dropped out late in the cycle, leaving an open primary to replace him as the party’s nominee.

Four candidates have emerged to replace Golden: Joe Baldacci, Matt Dunlap, Paige Loud and Jordan Wood.

But despite the national stakes, the four-way ranked choice primary has been lukewarm, rather than a fiery proving ground for candidates.

everyone feels like Platner has already been crowned. Makes for less interest in voting in the primary.
