CA-40: Calvert (R), Kim (R) set to clash in member-on-member House matchup

Republican Reps. Young Kim (R-Calif.) and Ken Calvert (R-Calif.) appear set to clash for California’s 40th Congressional District in November, according to Decision Desk HQ.

As of Wednesday morning, Calvert had locked down his general election spot with 36.2 percent of the vote, while Kim had 21.7 percent of the vote in the five-way race. The next closest candidate is Democrat Esther Kim-Varet at 15.5 percent.

Kim now represents California’s 40th Congressional District, and Calvert the 41st Congressional District. But last year’s Democratic-led redistricting in the Golden State shook up contests in Republican districts that now tilt toward Democrats and, in the new 40th, drew both incumbents into the same district.

California has a jungle primary system, in which the two top candidates in a primary advance to the general election, no matter the party.

This district was specifically designed to pack as many Republican voters as possible.
