NJ-SEN: Booker to face off against Justin Murphy in New Jersey Senate race

Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) is set to face off against GOP nominee Justin Murphy in November after both candidates secured victories in New Jersey’s Senate primaries Tuesday.

Murphy, a Navy veteran and former Senate candidate, emerged as the victor in a crowded Republican primary despite having virtually no money in his campaign account. His campaign has negative $24 in cash on hand, according to the Federal Election Commission.

The match-up is expected to heavily favor Booker, who has represented New Jersey in the Senate since 2013. The incumbent, who ran unopposed, also has more than $22 million in cash on hand, records show.

The solid blue state has not elected a Republican to the U.S. Senate since 1972.
