New York Times reporters are subpoenaed after Air Force One reporting, newspaper says

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration has subpoenaed several New York Times journalists after their report on security concerns involving the new Air Force One, according to the paper.

The new jet, which President Donald Trump received as a gift from Qatar, entered service last week.

The subpoenas issued Friday seek to force the reporters to testify before a federal grand jury in Manhattan on Wednesday, the paper said, adding that federal agents delivered some subpoenas to the reporters at their homes.

“The appearance of federal law enforcement agents on the doorstep of news reporters should shock the conscience of any American who believes in the Constitution and the press freedom it protects,” David McCraw, a lawyer for the Times, said in a statement.

Issuing subpoenas represents a major escalation in the Republican president’s effort to threaten independent new organizations by leveraging the power of the federal government against them. It is also part of a systematic pattern by Trump to attempt to undermine press freedom in order to shield him from negative coverage.

Earlier this year, the Justice Department issued subpoenas seeking to compel testimony from reporters at The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal. In both cases, the department later withdrew the subpoenas.

Times Journalists Subpoenaed as Trump Escalates Pressure on Media
The Justice Department is seeking to compel testimony from reporters who wrote about the new Air Force One. The Times called the move a “brazen act.”

The Trump administration issued subpoenas on Friday to several journalists for The New York Times, after the news outlet reported this week on security concerns involving President Trump’s new Qatari-donated Air Force One.

The subpoenas — which seek to force the reporters to testify before a federal grand jury in Manhattan on Wednesday — were an extraordinary escalation in President Trump’s efforts to threaten and intimidate independent news organizations.

In some cases, the subpoenas were delivered by federal agents who showed up at reporters’ homes.

“The appearance of federal law enforcement agents on the doorstep of news reporters should shock the conscience of any American who believes in the Constitution and the press freedom it protects,” said David McCraw, The Times’s top newsroom lawyer, in a statement on Friday evening.

“Our journalists report the facts and advance the American public’s right to know how their government is operating and their taxpayer dollars are being used,” Mr. McCraw wrote. “This brazen act should be seen as nothing more than an attempt to prevent the public from knowing what is happening in their country by intimidating journalists from doing their jobs.”

The subpoenas contain few specifics, asking only that the journalists testify “in regard to an alleged violation of federal criminal law.” They were issued by Jay Clayton, the U.S. attorney in Manhattan. Mr. Clayton, who leads one of the country’s most prominent law enforcement offices, was recently nominated by Mr. Trump to serve as director of national intelligence.

And this flying gilded palace can’t dodge a spitball?
Next thing you know, the new paint job will start peeling and the cabin festers a chronic algae infestation.
Trump is gonna need a lotta scapegoats and excuses for this botched job (again).

Donnie had a pissy and his minions are doing as they're told. They can have all the hearings they want but unless a crime was committed, which it wasn't, they can all pound sand.

If they were being charged with a crime, or for revealing top secret info, that's one thing. But a subpoena means they must report for questioning. The story has been published, that's what the reporters know, and now it's out there for everyone else. The reporters will refused to name their sources, because that's part of their job.

I think we need to hear from US Attorney Jay Clayton on why this happened, and what's he trying to accomplish?

have been standing up to the WH.

Do know that djt -- and possibly the SCOTUS conservative justices -- have been itching to trash a 1964 decision, The New York Times v Sullivan.

That libel case decision gave the press wider latitude when covering and opining about the actions of public officials. It established the principle that libel lawsuits had to prove that there was a malicious intent behind publishing a negative story about a public official. By malice, it was meant that the news outlet (or reporters) knew the published facts were false or that there was a reckless disregard for whether the information was false or true.

It's the only way. They'll never do it, but it's the only thing that might stop this monster. Stop reporting on the White House goings on, period. No White House press corps, period.

16. Trump administration subpoenas New York Times journalists who reported security concerns around new Air Force One

trump's feelings were hurt when NO ONE bought his lame story as to why he flew back in the older Air Force One. trump was told that it would take years to get the Qatari grift plane ready but did not want to wait.

Four New York Times journalists who reported on security concerns surrounding a Qatari-gifted jet serving as the new Air Force One have been subpoenaed by the Justice Department, the news outlet reported early Saturday.....

The subpoenas suggest the Trump administration is trying to find out who leaked to The Times before the news organization reported this week that President Donald Trump left a NATO summit in Turkey on the old Air Force One over security concerns from the Secret Service.

The orders for the journalists to testify came after FBI Director Kash Patel met with officials at the White House on Friday to discuss the bureau’s investigation into disclosures about security concerns with the new plane, sources familiar with the matter told CNN.....

Sources told CNN that Trump has been fuming at the reports of security concerns surrounding the $400 million gift from Qatar, and was embarrassed and angry in recent days when it became public that the plane was not equipped enough to be flown directly from Turkey back home......

But CNN reported Thursday that security personnel felt more comfortable with the president aboard the older Air Force One — which was built from scratch with presidential safety in mind — rather than the plane that had recently been retrofitted after it was donated by Qatar.

Trump then switched planes at a secure US airbase in the UK. He downplayed the idea security was the reason for the switch, though sources have told CNN and other outlets that it was.
