Conservative Christians Keep Voting For Predators. Here's Why

https://timwhitakerspeaks.substack.com/p/conservative-christians-keep-voting

*snip*

The Lesser-of-Two-Evils Indoctrination

Because as a former evangelical, I can tell you that the logic goes something like this:

Sure, maybe Republican candidate A isn’t perfect, but he’s going to be much better than any Democrat.

That’s how it works. It’s that simple.

This indoctrination, that Democrats are always worse than any Republican candidate, is very powerful. It’s part of what makes it so hard to break through to the people still in that dark, damp basement of evangelicalism.

This is how you get the “lesser of two evils” talking point during the 2020 and 2024 elections. Maybe you had friends who are more conservative but didn’t like Trump but thought that Biden or Harris would be so much worse. They’ve been taught since day one: nothing is worse than the Democrat in power. Nothing

And what they’ll tell you is: “Yeah, look, Trump isn’t great, but Biden would have been so much worse.”

And then you say, “Well, on what?”

And they’ll say, “Well, probably abortion.”

But then when you show them that abortion rates went up under Trump they’ll move to a different issue like the broad topic of the economy, whatever that means. But when you show them that Trump exploded our national debt, they’ll move to another issue.

The goalpost is always moving.

Let's not talk about what Jehovah did to Mary, though. Joseph was mighty pissed about it till an Angel told him to drop it.

It never crosses their mind to say that Trump is the lesser of two evils. They do not see him as evil. They see him as a predator, just like them.

And having grown in Mi'ssippi, I can't help but know what that underlying motive is:

Jim Crow/Archie Bunker bigotry - and hatred of one's fellow man in general.

Yes - Southern right-wingers hate even their peers, as their notoriously frequent calls on each other to Child Protective Services out of retaliation or sheer spite show.

The rest, is mostly pretext.

which argues the garden variety, "Well, the Democrats (or Republicans?) are always going to be worse ..". With no more distinction, or evaluation, involved than that.

Not a matter if 'worship' - purely a matter of finding convenient rationale and excuse - for looking rhe other way.

Bait and switch. Convince people to embark on an election crusade to eliminate abortion, then give all the goodies to the ruling rich. They have touted “Family Values” but really mean abortion. Behind the scenes, we know better. They don’t care.
