(Tuscaloosa) County school system says same-sex prom dates never restricted

TUSCALOOSA | The Southern Poverty Law Center announced in a news release Thursday that it reached a resolution with the Tuscaloosa County School System about allowing gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students to attend their prom with dates of the same sex.
The news release also said that the school system recognized the right of students to wear clothing with slogans expressing acceptance of LGBT people.
Were really happy that the district is doing the right thing and this is everything that we are asking for, said Sam Wolfe, an attorney with the Montgomery-based SPLC.
But school system officials said they didnt have to change anything to comply with the SPLCs demands because the school system never had a policy forbidding same-sex prom dates or a ban on clothing supporting LGBT people.
