There were reports of multiple fatalities early Wednesday after a vehicle plowed into a crowd on Bourbon Street in New Orleans' French Quarter. The popular tourist district would have been busy in the early hours of New Year's Day.
Witnesses told CBS News reporter Kati Weis that a truck crashed into a crowd on Bourbon Street at high speed, and then the driver got out and started firing a weapon, with police returning fire.
Weis saw multiple people on the ground being treated for injuries.
A New Orleans Police Department spokesperson told CBS News "initial reports show a car may have plowed into a group of people. Injuries are unknown but there are reported fatalities."
This breaking news story will be updated.

Unfortunately that won't stop some from being able to attack people going to or from an event.
If there were no barriers it was irresponsible. If there were their type and placement need to be reviewed.

At least 10 people are dead and about 30 others are injured after a white pickup truck struck a crowd on Bourbon Street early on Wednesday, before the driver exited the vehicle and shot at police New Orleans police and city officials said.
LaToya Cantrell, the mayor of New Orleans, described the incident as a "terrorist attack."
The strike appeared to be intentional, police told ABC News, adding the driver had not been taken into custody. Local authorities asked the FBI for assistance early on Wednesday, a senior federal law enforcement source told ABC News. A command center was being set up, the source said.
"A horrific act of violence took place on Bourbon Street earlier this morning," Gov. Jeff Landry said, adding that his family was praying for the victims and first responders.
Leading up to the holidays, federal law enforcement and intelligence had warned police around the country that low-tech vehicle ramming was a key area of concern and that they needed to prepare -- and that was before the German Christmas market attack on Dec. 20, in which five people were killed.
In a Dec. 9 assessment for the Times Square New Years Eve celebration, federal and local agencies wrote: We remain concerned about the use of vehicle ramming against high-profile outdoor events Vehicle ramming has become a recurring tactic employed by threat actors in the West, marked by a continued interest by (terrorists, extremists) and lone offenders in targeting crowded pedestrian areas..............

People are returning to their French Quarter hotel following after being evacuated. Were working to learn more as to what caused the evacuation.
The Sugar Bowl is scheduled today. Many visitors are in town.

(11,652 posts)Easier to do, you don't need training, you don't need special tools, you just need to own/rent/steal a truck/car and push the pedal to the floor in front of a crowd, hopefully this doesn't spawn a bunch of copycats.

Driver's tests, car inspections to make sure they are safe. Not to mention the legal requirements to keep toddlers from being able to use them. permits. etc.

(11,293 posts)Could it not be a simple act of mass criminality? I think the word "terrorism" is thrown around a little too lightly these days. Let's find out who the guy is and whether he left any notes or a so-called "manifesto" (God, I hate that word, I think it's overused and wrongly used) before it's called "terrorism".
