Final draft of Gaza truce deal presented after 'breakthrough'
Source: Reuters
"The next 24 hours will be pivotal to reaching the deal," the official said, characterising the draft as the outcome of a breakthrough reached in the early hours of Monday.
Both sides have agreed for months broadly on the principle of halting the fighting in return for the release of hostages held by Hamas and Palestinian detainees held by Israel. However, Hamas has always insisted that the deal must lead to a permanent end to the war and Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, while Israel has said it will not end the war until Hamas is dismantled.
Trump's Jan. 20 inauguration is now widely seen in the region as a de facto deadline. The president-elect has said there would be "hell to pay" unless hostages held by Hamas are freed before he takes office, while outgoing President Biden has also pushed hard for a deal before he leaves.

(11,511 posts)This is not a deal. This is extortion. Everything Hamas gets in this "deal" is the price for the captors they hold.
This is no more a deal than Dr. Evil demanding "A Million Dollars!" for not destroying the world is a deal.

(36,229 posts)On that point I agree with Israel, and I think the US needs to stand with Israel on that ONE POINT.
But the humanitarian aid to the Palestinians has been woefully lacking for a lot of reasons. Maybe we're not good at administering aid, since we're taking sides? I don't know. I'm disappointed that Tony Blinken will not be able to follow this through to the finish line, and neither will Joe Biden.

(141 posts)That is basically an impossible metric, Hamas isn't just a gang of ruthless terrorists, Hamas is the government of Gaza, a government developed and supported by Bibi Netenyahu. Hamas provides healthcare, they run hospitals, they control and operate the infrastructure, they are the only social organizing entity in Gaza. Hamas and Israel need to agree to a framework that provides security for both sides but don't hold your breath, Bibi and his right-wing government don't want peace and neither does the armed wing of Hamas.
Beastly Boy
(11,511 posts)Hamas toppled the legitimate government of Gaza in 2007. Their ministry is running hospitals built by Indonesia, Jordan, UAE amd yes, Israel. Their schools are financed by UNRWA. Their infrastructure has always been subpar because they stole billions of dollars in international aid and spent the money on rockets and tunnels that the civilians are forbidden to use even as shelters. Their social organizing is radical Islam, and they brutally suppress Gaza's traditional social structures based on local clan-based institutions.
The framework that provides security for both sides doesn't need Hamas. In fact, Hamas is what stands in the way of security in Gaza.
And the whole world knows this. This is why Hamas has been designated a terrorist organization by an overwhelming majority of world's countries.
Nobody needs Hamas. Any suggestion to the contrary is ridiculous.

(35,504 posts)What does "there will be hell to pay" even mean? He's going to start directly bombing Gaza?
All the credit, none of the actual work. The story of his cursed life.

I imagine that would produce quite a lot of "collateral damage".
But you asked and that's the only "clarification" I've heard in any of the sites I wander through in the course of any 72-hr period.
