Michelle Obama will not attend Trump's inauguration, her office says

Former first lady Michelle Obama will not attend Donald Trump's inauguration on Jan. 20, her office confirmed Tuesday. A spokesperson did not immediately provide a reason for her absence. Barack Obama, the 44th president, is expected at the swearing-in ceremony, according to a statement.

"Former President Barack Obama is confirmed to attend the 60th Inaugural Ceremonies. Former First Lady Michelle Obama will not attend the upcoming inauguration," the brief statement from the Office of Barack and Michelle Obama said. A spokesperson for former President George W. Bush confirmed he and Mrs. Bush are planning to be at the Capitol for the festivities.

Michelle Obama also did not attend funeral services for Jimmy Carter last week, where all former living presidents congregated. The other living first ladies were also in attendance. She has been a fixture at each inauguration since 2008, including Trump's first inaugural in 2017, as she and her husband were leaving the White House. In 2023, she spoke about what it was like to be in the audience as Trump was sworn in.

"To sit on that stage and watch the opposite of what we represented on display, there was no diversity, there was no color on that stage," Obama said. "There was no reflection of the broader sense of America. Many people took pictures of me and they're like, you weren't in a good mood. No, I was not."

I think Michele Obama has her reasons for not attending and that is good enough for me.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Former first lady Michelle Obama will skip the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump, the second time in two weeks that she is not attending a gathering of former U.S. leaders and their spouses, but former Presidents Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush will be there.

Laura Bush and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will join their husbands for the Jan. 20 swearing-in ceremony at the Capitol, representatives said.

“Former President Barack Obama is confirmed to attend the 60th Inaugural Ceremonies. Former first lady Michelle Obama will not attend the upcoming inauguration,” said a statement from the Office of Barack and Michelle Obama that was shared with The Associated Press.

No explanation was given for why Michelle Obama was skipping Trump's inauguration. She also did not attend last week's state funeral in Washington for former President Jimmy Carter. Former presidents Trump, Obama, Bush and Clinton and their spouses attended — except for her.

Bill Clinton will attend the swearing-in ceremony, a person familiar with the former president’s schedule confirmed for the AP. Hillary Clinton will also attend, a spokesperson said. ................

Of course for all we know, she might have had some kind of medical procedure but we did see her at the DNC convention and she was very reluctant to go to that while the pundits and gasbags continually made an issue demanding where she was.

She had been treated like shit, called all kinds of obscene names - literally from day one in 2008 - and people expect black women to keep taking that.
