A city in California has delayed a vote on a resolution that would have declared its intent to assist federal immigration authorities "to the maximum legal extent possible." The El Cajon City Council decided to send the resolution back to city staff to be revised after residents expressed strong opposition during a council meeting on Tuesday.
Why It Matters
President-elect Donald Trump has pledged to carry out mass deportations of undocumented immigrants when he returns to office this month. California Governor Gavin Newsom and others have vowed to resist the second Trump administration's plans.
Newsom's administration has drafted a plan to help undocumented immigrants under threat of deportation. A day after Trump won November's election, Newsom called on lawmakers in his state to convene a special session to safeguard the state's progressive policies and give the attorney general's office more funding to prepare for legal fights.
California is a sanctuary state and generally prohibits local law enforcement from cooperating with U.S Immigration and Customs Enforcement on the federal agency's enforcement of immigration laws. Trump's incoming border czar Tom Homan has said the incoming administration will aggressively enforce immigration laws in sanctuary cities and states and may seek the prosecution of officials who "knowingly harbor and conceal" undocumented immigrants from federal immigration authorities.
