Police union that endorsed Trump condemns Jan. 6 pardons

President Donald Trump's mass pardon of Jan. 6 rioters, many of whom assaulted police officers defending the U.S. Capitol, has provoked a furious response from the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) and the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) on Tuesday.
The FOP, the nation's largest police union, endorsed Trump in 2024 and in his previous two campaigns, declaring even after the 2021 insurrection that it was "clear he supported law enforcement and border security."
But on Tuesday, the FOP signed on to a a joint statement denouncing both Trump and former President Joe Biden's pardons of individuals convicted of killing or assaulting law enforcement officers, saying that "allowing those convicted of these crimes to be released early diminishes accountability and devalues the sacrifices made by courageous law enforcement officers and their families."
"When perpetrators of crimes, especially serious crimes, are not held fully accountable, it sends a dangerous message that the consequences for attacking law enforcement are not severe, potentially emboldening others to commit similar acts of violence," the statement continued.

After their initial "deer-in-the-headlights" non-response yesterday - https://www.democraticunderground.com/10143378068
they finally woke up and blinked, but only long enough to spit out a nonsensical "both sides" statement.

(3,703 posts)Venezuela: Who are the Colectivos?
Government opponents fear the armed groups more than police, but for Maduro, the colectivos are likened to angels of socialism.
Caracas, Venezuela Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido arrived at a rally of several hundred waiting supporters last month in San Bernardino, a middle-class Caracas neighbourhood.
The stage where Guaido was set to speak was at the bottom of a long narrow street, where men, women and children had gathered.
Not long after Guaido arrived, tear gas engulfed the area, thrown by masked and heavily armed civilians on motorcycles.
From the stage, an organiser appealed to the crowd to crouch down, stay calm and not run, especially given the large number of elderly people and children there.
As soon as the gas dissipated, Guaido got on the stage just as more motorcycled men began firing live rounds, presumably to frighten off the opposition leader. He refused to budge. On this occasion, no one was killed or injured.
Venezuelans call these irregular armed gangs colectivos or collectives, while the UN Human Rights Commission describes them as para-police, or paramilitary forces loyal to President Nicolas Maduro.
These people raped women, children, robbed, killed, tortured, and were never made accountable for their actions, on the contrary, as long as they were loyal to the regime, they were paid, given motorcycles, guns, etc. They were thugs who terrorized the general public. That is what trump wants, Venezuela was the blueprint of what they want to do here.

Its their own fault that the consequences for attacking law enforcement are not severe, potentially emboldening others to commit similar acts of violence. And anyone who is a member of the FOP who doesnt like those consequences can point the finger right at themselves.
They own all of it. Dumbasses.

(29,815 posts)or assaulting law enforcement officers"?
President Biden didn't pardon any of the January 6th violent rioters, Trump did.
Trump pardoned them all, including Daniel Rodriguez, one of the men who attacked D.C. police officer Michael Fanone with a stun gun, and who received a sentence of 12 and a half years from Judge Amy Berman Jackson.
President Biden commuted the sentence of Leonard Peltier, who was wrongly convicted of killing 2 FBI agents and who spent nearly 50 years in prison for a crime he didn't commit.
Now "Mr. Peltier is almost 80 years old and has several compounding health conditions, including kidney disease, diabetes, near-total blindness, and an untreated aortic aneurysm. He requires a wheelchair." (Wikipedia)
(Rodriguez and the others who attacked and beat up Capital police on January 6th are all fairly young and in good health, unlike Peltier)
Peltier's sentence was commuted to indefinite house arrest by Biden.
His case doesn't compare to the violent cop-killing January 6th convicted rioters' cases.
The FOP's statement denouncing both Trump and Biden is bullshit!
Fuck the FOP!

It will be too bad for those left behind, but actions, like endorsements and votes, have consquences.
