Scientific researchers are concerned after the National Institutes of Health (NIH) abruptly canceled numerous meetings essential to the fellowship and grant approval process earlier this week. At the present time, all Federal advisory committee meetings are canceled, reads an internal email from the NIH shared with The Hill.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding.
We will get back in touch with you when we have further information. Thank you for your service to NIH.
Some of the canceled meetings include study sections, which review the applications for NIH fellowships and grants, and advisory council meetings, which determines if an application should receive a recommendation for funding from an NIH institute or center.
A National Vaccine Advisory Committee meeting scheduled for Feb. 20-21 was one of the meetings canceled, as well as a meeting of the Presidential Advisory Council on Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria slated for Jan. 28-29, according to Stat News, which first reported the cancellations.

If I received an email like that from my employer, I would quietly start looking for another job.

(1,058 posts)There are some 30,000 individuals in some 1200 or so institutions depending on a paycheck come either June 1st or Sept 1st depending on the grant type.
These section meetings are very difficult to arrange. Depending on the grant type and size some 12 individuals are involved. At NIH most grant reviewers are clinicians, surgeons, department chairs and PhDs with large labs. Yeah! They voluntarily review grants about midnight or so after a long day in the clinic, OR or lab. I pity the poor souls rescheduling these study sessions.
IMHO, Trump is after the $44 billion dollars controlled by NIH.
I first met Dr Fauci at a study section site visit.😉

(27,980 posts)I have a good friend who does research in Alzheimer's Disease and for several years got funding from the NIH. Hes effectively finished. He was telling me that there are several new treatments for cancer and dementia that are in the works that will be stalled.
This will set the US back years.
