Washington state woman is arrested in the fatal shooting of a Vermont Border Patrol agent
Source: AP
A Washington state woman has been charged in the fatal shooting of a U.S. Border Patrol agent during a Vermont traffic stop that happened days after authorities began watching her and a German companion, who also died in the highway firefight, the FBI said Friday.
Teresa Youngblut, 21, faces two weapons charges in connection with the death of Border Patrol Agent David Maland, 44, who died Monday during the shootout in Coventry, a small town about 20 miles from the Canadian border.
According to an FBI affidavit, a border agent pulled over Youngblut and Felix Baukholt on Interstate 91 because Baukholt appeared to have an expired visa. Youngblut, who had been driving Baukholts car, got out and opened fire on Maland and other officers without warning, the FBI alleges. Baukholt tried to draw a gun but was shot, the affidavit states.
At least one border agent fired on Youngblut and Baukholt, but authorities havent specified whose bullets hit whom.

(1,583 posts)Like how did they know he had an expired visa? Is it in his motor vehicle records?
Did the BP approach with guns drawn? Were they driving a cop car or an unmarked? This reads like a sanitized revision of what happened

(31,904 posts)It was Baukholt's vehicle, so I guess when they checked, they found it he was here in on expired Visa, so BP was handed the case, probably as a probable cause to stop them. Regular law enforcement probably didn't have probable cause to stop them. Regular law enforcement tried, but didn't get anywhere. If it hadn't been Baulholt's vehicle, they would have been on their merry way to do whatever....
This was a botched stop. Youngblut and Baukholt were clearly up to something dangerous and possibly beyond the scope of a simple BP stop.
About two hours before the shooting, investigators watched Baukholt exit a Walmart in Newport, which is just north of Coventry, with two packages of aluminum foil. According to the affidavit, he was seen wrapping unidentifiable objects while seated in the passenger seat.
During a search of the car after the shootout, authorities found cellphones wrapped in foil, a ballistic helmet, night-vision goggles, respirators and ammunition, the FBI said. The also found a package of shooting range targets, including some that had been used, two-way radios, about a dozen electronic devices, travel and lodging information for multiple states, and an apparent journal.

They would not answer authorities questions previously asked by investigators. Are firearms and tactical gear OK?
Are you defending them?
They were pulled over when it was determined he had expired Visa, and she open fired and they fired back.
Do you think they are making it up? How do you think the BP agent died?

(48,222 posts)They watched them for days but pulled them over on an interstate traffic stop. A lot seems unknown or unstated at this point.

(6,460 posts)people. Seems very sketch, over a expired visa. Why would they be carrying guns, and start shooting unless they were up to something. Note WHITE EXP. VISA HOLDERS , probably will not make the 5'oclock news across the country, but the Mexican picking beans rounded up with their kids are going to the camp.

(31,904 posts)probable cause to stop them. It was his vehicle. Law enforcement had tried to question them earlier. I guess when they ran the plates, they realized that BP had probable cause to stop him because he had an expired Visa.

(2,583 posts)Years ago under the Visa Waiver Pilot Program (VWPP), German (or other approved countries) citizens would arrive at a US airport and receive a 90-day visa by the CBP officer. When the 90 days were up, the visa expired. One tactic for "overstays" was to leave the US on day 88 for Mexico or Canada then appear at the border for a fresh 90-day visa. These are tourist/business trip visas only.
Teresa Youngblut ('X')
Below is the press release about the charges against Teresa Youngblut. I wouldn't be surprised if she came from a troubled background:

Conjecture: Teresa and Felix could be RW nuts who met on a social platform and began a long distance relationship. Trumpf seems to be attracting strange people to the US. A Wagnerite with a drone was detained crossing the US-Mexican border a few weeks ago.

(1,542 posts)She is or was a computer science student set to graduate next year. He was a math grad of the prestigious Canadian University of Waterloo. It seems like he was in the US on a valid work visa, working in finance.
If this was terrorism, I don't think it was right wing. Could be drugs. Could be bonnie-and-clyde thrill seeking. Could be UHC inspired terrorism. Why would you jump to right wing terrorism when there's nothing that actually supports that as of right now?

Who was Felix Bauckholt, the quant trader on an allegedly expired H1B visa who died after a shoot-out at the Vermont-Canada border this week?
Bauckholt's still live LinkedIn profile says he worked in the New York office of Tower Research Capital, the high frequency trading firm. Tower Research didn't respond to a request to comment on Bauckholt's recent employment status, but the alleged expiry of his visa suggests he may no longer have been working there.
Tower Research Capital is a high frequency market maker and prop trading firm that operates high speed trading strategies. US government data suggests that two people at Tower Research have had H1B visas renewed this year: a head of data on a base salary of $350k and a quant trader on a base salary of $165k. It has 1,200 employees in total.
Bauckholt's LinkedIn profile says he joined Tower in October 2021 after two years at Radix Trading. He also completed a Jane Street internship in 2018. Jane Street interns now earn around $20k a month.

(2,583 posts)Whether these two are potential "Luigis," high on drugs, or a modern day "Bonnie and Clyde", is all conjecture too. Either way, the two didn't want to be taken alive for whatever reason and 21-year-old Teresa Youngblut threw her life away. An autopsy on the German will determine if he had taken drugs.

(51,755 posts)Why were they in Vermont in the first place? That's a several-DAY drive from Seattle.
The only thing that comes to mind is...maybe they were trying to escape across the Canadian border? If so, there are lots of places in Washington state, Idaho and Montana where you can do that.
