Donald Trump says residents of Greenland want to be part of US

Source: The Guardian

Donald Trump has said he believes the US will take control of Greenland, after details emerged of a “horrendous” call in which he made economic threats to Denmark, which has said the territory is not for sale.

Speaking onboard Air Force One on Saturday, Trump said: “I think we’re going to have it,” and claimed that the Arctic island’s 57,000 residents “want to be with us”.

“I do believe Greenland, we’ll get because it really has to do with freedom of the world,” he said. “It has nothing to do with the United States, other than we’re the one that can provide the freedom.”

[.......]

His latest comments follow a “horrendous” phone call with the Danish prime minister, Mette Frederiksen, during which Trump was said to be aggressive and confrontational in his attempt to take over the island. Five current and former senior European officials told the Financial Times that the call had gone very badly. “It was horrendous,” said one of the sources. “It was a cold shower,” another told the paper. “Before, it was hard to take seriously, but I do think it is serious and potentially very dangerous.”

Trump can't even dream of. Informed Greenlanders won't choose this.
But Trump will start a trade war, sanctions, etc. with Denmark if they say no, or he'll just send in the army.
Then NATO has to decide if they'll go to war over Greenland with Russia at their backs.

and that our forces will physically remove any Danish diplomats from the capital city if necessary, and declare the country to be US territory. The Danish government will not want their diplomats in harms way, so they will bring them home. US military will disembark and take over the capital city, and that will be that. Trump will simply take it, without a shot being fired. And Putin will absolutely lick his chops over the discord this will cause with NATO, which will lead the US leaving it, one of his greatest dreams. IMHO, the best chance Greenland has is that Trump is thwarted by Americans. For a historical reference see: Chamberlain, Neville.

as to "what repercussions" for Trump trying to take over Greenland not because I disagree but I'm looking for specifics.
I really don't know what they can do that will prevail. But I never thought they'd do nothing.

NATO will see this as a red line like they see Ukraine as a red line. And they are smarter than he is. Hope that is as powerful as Trump not caring about lives.

Sorry I can't recall the source. The question is, how soon? Trump will move fast.
NATO is legally obligated to defend Greenland.

I'm not saying they would win, but they might make it harder and more politically frought for Trump. If he takes it with no shots or lives lost it will unfortunately boost his popularity.

I agree with the likelihood of your scenario and don't want to see lives sacrificed if the cause is hopeless. But no resistance would encourage more of the same. As you have referenced, Neville Chamberlain.

Giving all the starving men he's screwed over jobs in the armed

Wheel out the 25th Amendment!

The only 'horrendous' thing is the mockery the last election has made of the US version of Democracy.

The world has seen batshit crazy before, and doesn't want to go there again.

We need to stop laughing read the history behind these propaganda moves, and pay attention to what's next. Because what he's saying and doing is not new.

The U.S. military won't let us attack a sovereign nation under this CiC's propaganda pretext of "liberating" it.

That it will all fall on the shoulders of the US Forces high command. Invading Greenland is clearly an illegal order : Denmark/Greenland poses no threat whatsoever and has not engagered in warmongering in any way towards the US. And the US would be attacking an ally. Guess we'll see but the intentions of TSF are clear I'm afraid.

Hitler claimed that Austria wanted to be incorporated into the Third Reich.

All he had to do was drive up to the eastern border with Austria with an army, cross the border, and drive in. Austria was mixed between capitulation and scared out of its mind. So it arranged for Austrians to line the roads to Vienna, cheering Hitler.

What is the military to do when given insane orders, like invade Greenland, Panama canal region?

Other countries have responded to such a situation with a military takeover of the government.

I am reminded of Maggie Thatcher sending in the troops to liberate a small island off the coast of Argentina, the Falklands, sparsely populated by sheep farmers and of no significance otherwise.
The British military went along with that.

Mon Jan 27, 2025, 09:00 AM

It starts "Donald Trump says", and that's the biggest reason - if Trump claims it, but there isn't another source, it's BS.

He does this to make himself seem important, to wind up allies like Greenland and Denmark (because he wants to make himself the Most Important Man in the World, with any "allies" subservient to him), to give little thrills to MAGA supporters who are aroused by dissing foreigners, and to cause chaos in the news media, meaning his illegal actions (eg trying to fire Inspectors General) get less coverage.

"Around 85% of Greenlanders do not want to become part of the US, a new poll has found, as Denmark's prime minister shored up support for its current status.

It comes after Donald Trump said the Arctic island was vital to US security and Denmark should give up control of its semi-autonomous territory.

According to Danish daily newspaper Berlingske, which commissioned the survey by pollster Verian, only 6% of Greenlanders are in favour of becoming part of the US, with 9% undecided."

DU rules are that polls are "analysis", so the results of them can't be used as an LBN story; but when the president of the USA lies about the same subject, that's news, but we're stuck with the media's "says..." formulation.

I suppose we need Chuck Schumer or someone (perhaps called "Simon"??? ) to say "Greenlanders don't want to be American subjects", use the poll as their proof, and for some media to report it.
