Miami man claims wife was detained in one of several Florida ICE raids: "They snatched her"

Source: CBS News

Updated on: January 27, 2025 / 12:18 AM EST

MIAMI — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids were reportedly conducted across South Florida on Sunday as President Trump begins to make good on his promise to increase the deportation of undocumented migrants, and one man exclusively told CBS News Miami his wife was taken during one of these raids.

The Homeland Security Investigation's (HSI) Miami office shared on X that federal law enforcement agencies conducted several immigration enforcement operations earlier Sunday. Meanwhile, agents from ICE's Miami office reported detaining some undocumented migrants on various offenses across South Florida, including in Broward and Martin Counties.

One man, who did not want to be named, told CBS News Miami that ICE had taken his wife during one of these raids in the Miami neighborhood of Brownsville. "It's despicable what they're doing right now," he said. "It's very embarrassing." The man told CBS News Miami that he wanted Mr. Trump to let his wife stay in the U.S., as their 11th anniversary is on Friday.

When asked if she was in the process of getting her U.S. citizenship, the man told CBS News Miami that she was right in the middle of it. The man's wife, who's Venezuelan and has lived in the U.S. for a few years, had a court date set up and "everything was good" until that moment. "They just came and they snatched her," the man told CBS News Miami.

AZ Real-ID does have citizenship indicators. TX's does not. Real-ID cannot be used for border crossings, unless you have an Enhanced-ID from WA and few states that border with Canada.

(I think the Enhanced ID was with the Canadian border because people who cross into Canada frequently drive in Canada...I guess there is a reciprocity about driving in Canada and the US. Mexican roads are a bit different, standards are not the same as the US: signs are different and generally smaller than here etc, signs are in Spanish, some symbols are different, cops do more than "traffic stops", the only reciprocity are on some major freeways in high-end "international business" areas. )

I just checked.
State-issued Enhanced Driver’s License: Your driver’s license or state ID card is REAL ID compliant if it has a star circled in gold printed in the upper right corner of your card, or if you have an enhanced driver’s license or state ID card that has a small American flag printed on it.

I seem to ONLY have conditional empathy now…thanks MAGA, for breaking that in me. Yes it’s “who did you vote for?” and/or “ did you vote at all?” before any compassion arises within…I don’t like being this way, but I think it’s necessary emotional armor that I’ll need to get thru the next 4 years…Hopefully the 2026 mid-term is a repudiation of this madness and some easy compassion can flow again.

My wife is still planning to come with me--so far. After all, she has never tried to live there, and now, more than ever, has no desire to do so. Our New2 York based daughter has been a US citizen from birth, so she has no problem. Her husband is not yet a citizen, but has applied, and has had a green card the whole time. Though not born in Israel, he currently holds Israeli citizenship.

Last Friday, I had lunch at the U.S. Senate dining room, and every one of the service staff has Hispanic with an accent string enough to suggest they were born outside of the USA. I wonder what the reaction will be when Trump sends his goons up to Capitol Hill to cart them away?

Trump targets Biden-era migrants from Cuba, Nicaragua, Venezuela and Haiti for deportation (Miami Herald)

More than a million migrants who were allowed to enter the United States during the Biden administration may have their temporary stays revoked and be rapidly deported, according to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement document that became public Friday.

That includes hundreds of thousands of nationals from Cuba, Nicaragua, Venezuela and Haiti who came under a temporary humanitarian parole program set up by the Biden administration that allowed them to legally live and work in the U.S. for two years.

More recent reporting says that ICE agents now have arrest quotas.

Miami congresswoman wants 'protection' for migrants with temporary permits under Biden program

WLRN Public Media | By Sherrilyn Cabrera,
Helen Acevedo
Published January 24, 2025 at 6:15 PM EST

U.S. Rep. María Elvira Salazar, R-Miami, is pressing the Trump administration to protect migrants who qualified under former President Biden’s “humanitarian parole” program, which specifically allows Cubans, Nicaraguans, Venezuelans and Haitians to live and work in the country for up to two years.

The Republican lawmaker’s letter on Friday to the Department of Homeland Security comes the day after the New York Times reported that the Trump administration is authorizing Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials to deport migrants who entered the country under temporary permits granted by the former administration.

The Times reported that two Biden-era programs were singled out by Trump administration officials. One allowed migrants seeking asylum in the U.S. to use an app, CBP One, to schedule appointments with U.S. immigration officials. The CBP One app program was canceled this week. The other was Biden’s humanitarian parole program.

Salazar’s letter to Acting DHS Secretary Benjamine Huffman was focused on the humanitarian parole program: “Although President Biden originally created this new program on dubious legal grounds and brought individuals here without a plan for their future, they were still enrolled under programs offered to them. Therefore, I believe they should have the ability to see their applications out to rectify their legal status.”

(snip)

LETTER (as sent through Xitter):

And as a typical jackass Republican, she still manages to hurl a nasty swipe at Biden who was TRYING to protect the very people she is begging to protect.

46. These are the guidelines for
Mon Jan 27, 2025, 03:04 PM

these acts. The ACLU has provided guidelines to help individuals understand their rights during ICE raids.

Here are some key points:

Stay Calm and Do Not Run: If ICE agents approach you, remain calm and do not run. Running can be used against you.

Know Your Rights: You have the right to remain silent. You do not have to answer questions about your immigration status or where you were born. You can say, "I am exercising my right to remain silent."

Do Not Open the Door: ICE agents cannot enter your home without a warrant signed by a judge. If they do not have a warrant, you do not have to let them in. Ask them to slip the warrant under the door or show it through a window.

Do Not Sign Anything: Do not sign any documents without speaking to a lawyer. Signing documents can have serious consequences for your immigration status.

Document the Raid: If possible, take notes, photos, or videos of the raid. Record the names and badge numbers of the agents, and any details about what happened.

Contact a Lawyer: If you or someone you know is detained, contact an immigration lawyer immediately. The ACLU and other organizations can provide legal assistance.

For more detailed information, you can visit the ACLU's ICE Raids page.

Stay safe and informed! If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.
