WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump has hung a copy of the Declaration of Independence in the Oval Office, according to images he shared on social media. The Republican president’s official account on X showed two images Monday of a framed copy of the historical document hanging on the wall not far from the president’s desk.
In one image, Trump is moving aside heavy dark blue curtains hung around the document to look underneath. It was not immediately clear where the copy came from and when it was installed.
“The Nationals Archives delivered the Declaration of Independence to the White House at the President’s request. It is displayed in the Oval Office where it will be carefully protected and preserved,” press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement.
The original version of the Declaration of Independence is very faded and displayed in the Archives’ building. On the version hanging in the White House, according to the images posted, the words are clear and legible. The White House and National Archives did not respond to messages inquiring what version of the document was in the White House.

Trump at the Kennedy Center yesterday.
“You look at the columns outside, you look at they’re supposed to be covered by something, whether it’s marble, or whatever, granite. They were never covered. They were painted. But bring it into more modern times, a lot of money has been given to it, and the money has not been properly spent,” Trump told reporters.

(11,655 posts)What's with the curtains? Does he close the curtains when he is entertaining dictators? Seriously, what's the significance of the curtains? And I don't know if anyone else has noticed the ornate gold items on the mantel behind the two chairs. What are those things? Trophies to himself? Don't care for the easel with the poster of the Gulf of America on it, at all. Has anyone ever noticed a floral arrangement in that room? A rubber plant or palm in a corner? Poor George and Abe : facepalm:

(19,942 posts)Sunlight destroys it. The Mona Lisa is displayed in a special room for that reason and no camera flash is allowed.
I'm sure he doesn't like having to cover it and I don't trust that he will keep it properly preserved.

(14,413 posts)telling them "it's the real Declaration of Independence...believe me." Trump used to tell everyone he had a $10 million original Renoir hanging on his wall; art historians said it was a fake, the real one was in a museum. Then there was Trump's Paris art theft caper during his first term:
"Trump swiped some art from the residence of the US ambassador to France during a 2018 visit, the same visit on which he cancelled a trip to visit fallen First World War Marines at the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery outside Paris after allegedly calling the dead 'suckers' and 'losers.'"
Trump "took several of the pieces in the ambassador’s historic residence in Paris, where he was staying and which serves as the flagship for the State Department’s 'Art in Embassies' cultural programme, without notifying the ambassador."
Trump had "a portrait and bust of Benjamin Franklin and a set of silver figurines depicting Greek mythological characters loaded onto Air Force One to bring them back to the White House. A bureaucratic nightmare ensued for the State Department and White House staffers, who worried that the $750,000 cache of art might not be legally transferable." The ambassador "was told that she would receive the work back in six years—or 2024, when a second term of Trump’s presidency would theoretically end."
"The loot, however, was deemed legal to enter the White House since it was technically US property… and all of the works were replicas or copies anyway. It remains unclear whether Trump knew that none of the pieces were original when he decided to take them home with him, or whether he, in truth, was the real sucker."
Trump is an imbecile.

(21,525 posts)Well... gold looking flag poles aren't unusual. There have been "gold" curtains in the WH before.
The only thing I see in those photos that's overdone is that ostentatious big, gold looking vase waaaay up in the upper left corner in a big niche above the window on the left in the photo.
I didn't even see it at first.

We actually displayed a real "broadside" version of it that got printed up "for the masses" a few weeks BEFORE the final signed one at the Museum of the American Revolution - https://whyy.org/articles/of-the-people-for-the-people-rare-broadside-of-the-declaration-of-independence-on-view/

Don’t tell him that a woman’s name is on it (the printed version - she printed the document and put her name on the bottom)
“As British forces chased George Washington’s Continental Army out of New Jersey in December 1776, a fearful Continental Congress packed the Declaration of Independence into a wagon and slipped out of Philadelphia to Baltimore. Weeks later, they learned that the Revolution had turned their way: Washington had crossed the Delaware River on Christmas Day and beaten the redcoats at Trenton and Princeton. Emboldened, the members of Congress ordered a second printing of the Declaration – and, for the first time, printed their names on it.
For the job, Congress turned to one of the most important journalists of America’s Revolutionary era. Also Baltimore’s postmaster, she was likely the United States government’s first female employee. At the bottom of the broadside, issued in January 1777, she too signed the Declaration: “Baltimore, in Maryland: Printed by Mary Katharine Goddard.”
