NASA astronauts have splashed down in SpaceX capsule after 9 months in space

After nine months on the International Space Station, a total of 286 days in space to be exact, NASA astronauts Sunita Williams and Barry Butch Wilmore splashed down in their SpaceX Dragon capsule off the coast of Florida just before 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Their mission, a test flight of Boeings Starliner spacecraft, was initially supposed to last about eight days. But it was extended after the Starliner suffered thruster problems and NASA decided to bring the astronauts home via SpaceX.
The astronauts have said they were prepared to stay longer and were eager to pitch in by conducting science experiments and maintenance aboard the orbiting laboratory.
NASA officials have said the decision about when and how to get them home was made based on safety and keeping the space station occupied, not politics. They were joined on the return trip by NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Russias Aleksandr Gorbunov.
