Trump to sign order to begin dismantling Education Department on Thursday

Source: CBS News

March 19, 2025 / 7:04 PM EDT

Washington — President Trump will sign an executive order to begin dismantling the Department of Education on Thursday, according to the White House. The signing has been in the works for weeks and will be marked by an event at the White House in which several Republican governors, including Mr. Trump's former rival Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, are expected to attend.

"President Trump's executive order to expand educational opportunities will empower parents, states, and communities to take control and improve outcomes for all students," White House spokesperson Harrison Fields said in a statement Wednesday. But completely eliminating the department would require congressional approval, which isn't certain.

Dismantling the Department of Education has long been a goal for Republicans, dating back to the Reagan administration. Hours after Education Secretary Linda McMahon was confirmed by the Senate, she issued a memo with the subject line "Our Department's Final Mission."

The memo said "this is our opportunity to perform one final, unforgettable public service to future generations of students. I hope you will join me in ensuring that when our final mission is complete; we will be able to say that we left American education freer, stronger, and with more hope for the future."

THAT is what should PRECEDE any crap that comes out of this administration. Media should NOT even entertain the illegal utterances as somehow "true" and in order to do that, the FACTS need to be given FIRST. Don't wait until halfway through an article or until the very end because when you do, you give credence to the lies.

No voting in congress on executive orders.

Dismantling the department of education by executive order is illegal and would require congress to pass a law to approve it but Trump is going ahead anyway setting up for another court battle.

Just like anything else in life, what takes a long time to build can be brought down extremely fast.

Assuming we have elections again I can certainly see Democrats winning with a mandate to fix what tRump and Elmo have ruined. However, just like every time at least back to Reagan, when repubs have left the country in shambles Democrats take the heat for not being able to get everything fixed in four short years.

Are you sure that's correct?

I read a shocking statistic a while back which I wasn't sure about until I looked it up..... 54% of adults in the US read below a 6th grade level.

The GQP prospers with an uneducated electorate, they're in no hurry to teach people to read and to learn critical thinking skills.

According to the "EDucation Index" which is is a component of the Human Development Index (HDI) published every year by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in 2019 (the latest year listed on wikipedia) the US ranked 16th.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Education_Index

According to the World Population Review, the US is ranked 31st for 2025.

https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/education-rankings-by-country

According to the World Top 20 Project Network the US is not in the Top 20

https://worldtop20.org/worldbesteducationsystem/

According to US NEW & World Report of most well developed public education systems, the US ranked 12th.

https://www.usnews.com/news/best-countries/rankings/well-developed-public-education-system

From Factcheck.org factchecking Trump's statements on US Education.

As justification for dismantling the federal Department of Education, President Donald Trump has repeatedly claimed that U.S. schools are “ranked 40 out of 40” in educational outcomes compared with other countries, while the U.S. “ranked No. 1 in cost per pupil.” Neither claim is accurate.

In reading, the U.S. average score of 504 was higher than the OECD average score of 476. Compared with the other 36 participating OECD members, the U.S. ranked 6th. Ireland and Japan were tied for the top ranking with an average score of 516, and Colombia was lowest with a score of 409. Looking at all of the 81 countries in the dataset, including non-OECD countries, the U.S. ranked 9th.

In science, the U.S. score of 499 was higher than the OECD average of 485. Among the 37 participating OECD countries, the U.S. ranked 12th. Japan was highest with a score of 547, and Mexico was lowest with a score of 410. Looking at all 81 countries in the PISA study, the U.S. ranked 16th.

In math, the U.S. average score of 465 ranked 28th out of 37 OECD countries. The U.S. score was lower than the OECD average of 472, though the difference was not statistically significant. The country with the highest average score was Japan (536), and the lowest was Colombia (383). Looking at all of the 81 countries in the PISA data, the U.S. math literacy score ranked 34th.

total spending per pupil at the primary level — elementary school — in the U.S. ranked 6th. According to the OECD, 93% of total expenditure on primary institutions comes from public sources in the U.S. Looking at secondary education — high school — the U.S. per pupil expenditure ($16,301) was 22% higher than the OECD average but below Norway ($19,831), Austria ($19,049), South Korea ($19,299), the Netherlands ($17,909), Belgium ($17,525), Germany ($17,077) and Australia ($16,498).

The first one I posted does appear optimistic. Here's one from Pew Research:

U.S. students ranked 28th out of 37 OECD member countries in math. Among OECD countries, Japanese students had the highest math scores and Colombian students scored lowest. The U.S. ranking was similar in 2018, the last time the test was administered. The U.S. average score for math fell by 13 percentage points between 2018 and 2022, but the U.S. was far from alone in experiencing a decline in scores. In fact, 25 of the 37 OECD countries saw at least a 10-point drop in average math scores from 2018 to 2022.

In science, the U.S. ranked 12th out of 37 OECD countries. Japanese students ranked highest and Mexican students ranked lowest. The U.S average science score was virtually unchanged since 2018. Across OECD countries, far fewer countries experienced a large decline in science scores than in math scores. Seven OECD countries saw their mean science scores decline by 10 points or more.

Yesterday it was the impeachment of judges who rule against the king. Today it's the dismantling the Department of Education. Tomorrow it will be something equally heinous . . . or worse. We are in the midst of a national nervous breakdown.
