GOP senators express alarm over scale of Trump tariffs

Source: The Hill

04/04/25 6:00 AM ET

Republican senators are expressing varying degrees of shock and alarm at the scale of President Trump’s “reciprocal” tariffs against trading partners and allies, which sent stock markets into a tailspin Thursday and fueled predictions the country is heading for a recession.

Republicans knew Trump’s announcement on a new round of tariffs — dubbed “Liberation Day” — was coming, but the sweeping nature of Trump’s bold action is sparking a panic among constituents at home. Republicans from agricultural states are particularly concerned as they worry that U.S.-produced farm products are likely to be targeted first by retaliatory tariffs from trading partners.

Then there’s a general concern that Trump’s tariffs will likely further drive up the price of consumer goods at a time when many Americans are fed up with inflation, which was a driving factor behind Republican victories in the 2024 election. “There’s a lot that I certainly don’t know,” Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) said. “How long are they going to last? There’s a lot of uncertainty.

“One of the things that I’m hearing from folks back home is they’re certainly afraid about what it’s going to mean for price increases, very afraid about that,” she said. Sen. Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) said he’s hearing from farmers in Kansas who are worried they’re going to get hit hard by retaliatory tariffs from foreign trading partners. “Most Kansans, including agriculture, which is so affected, I think they were expecting something less dramatic,” he said.

Get on the TV shows and tell the American people that
Republicans will NOT hold him accountable and if they want to keep their jobs, their rights, and not be financially destroyed they need to kick them out.

They only care about their billionaire friends and don’t care if you or your family suffer.

we knew he was going to impose tariffs and we were fine with it but, we are shocked to see the extent of those tariffs and the resulting stock market crash. Oops.
I guess they'll have to put a committee together and study this a bit. Then we'll act on it a year from now so we can campaign on those actions. See, we are a very independent body holding this administration accountable. In the meantime our 401's are in the dumpster, and seniors are more dependent upon a system your billionaire buddy is trying to eliminate so the top 10% doesn't have to pay taxes.
Is that a fair assessment?

Ha, ha! Go fuck yourselves! He said all along that's what he was going to do.

And don't give me that Murkowski is a "good Republican." All decent people left that brand long ago. She just isn't quite the piece of shit the rest of them are.

I went to my local supermarket today and complained that I have a trade deficit with them. I subsidize them hundreds of dollars a month and get nothing in return. (Besides food but who cares). It is a rip off and they have been doing it for years! It stops now. From now on I am imposing an extra expense on myself, when I buy their goods. They may laugh now, but we all know they are going to cave and make a deal.

Do these Republican a-holes have any idea as to how these tariff rates were formulated? A middle high schooler could not come up with a more inept math formula based in myth and non-fact. You take your import deficit value, divide it into your export value to that particular country, and the percentage value is the figure you apply as the tariff. Based on nothing but fabricated BS! Childish, mindless, untruthful and complete nonsense, this is what this administration wants you to believe and blindly swallow. AMERICANS, WAKE UP, STAND UP, DO SOMETHING NOW!! This asshole and his gang are running your lives into the ground, and they don't give a shit about you!
