Donald Trump Demands Investigations Into Negative Approval Rating Polls
Source: Newsweek
President Donald Trump has said pollsters that have shown his approval ratings sliding in recent weeks should be investigated for "election fraud." Trump cited recent polls from The New York Times, ABC News/The Washington Post, and Fox News, which put his approval rating on 42 percent, 39 percent, and 44 percent respectively. Responding to the polls, Trump wrote on Truth Social on Monday: "They are negative criminals who apologize to their subscribers and readers after I win elections big, much bigger than their polls showed I would win, loose a lot of credibility, and then go on cheating and lying for the next cycle, only worse." Newsweek contacted the White House for comment on Monday outside of regular working hours.
The ABC News/The Washington Post poll showed that Trump's approval rating had dropped to the lowest level of any president in 80 years at this point in their presidencies. The New York Times/Siena poll found that only 31 percent of respondents approved of Trump's handling of the deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, and only 43 percent approved of his handling of the economy.
Responding to the pollsters, Trump wrote: "Great pollster John McLaughlin, one of the most highly respected in the industry, has just stated that The Failing New York Times poll, and the ABC/Washington Post poll, about a person named DONALD J. TRUMP, ME, are FAKE POLLS FROM FAKE NEWS ORGANIZATIONS.
"The New York Times has only 37% Trump 2024 voters, and the ABC/Washington Post Poll has only 34% Trump Voters, unheard of numbers unless looking for a negative result, which they are." He added: "They suffer from Trump Derangement Syndrome, and there is nothing that anyone, or anything, can do about it. THEY ARE SICK, almost only write negative stories about me no matter how well I am doing (99.9% at the Border, BEST NUMBER EVER!), AND ARE TRULY THE ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE! I wish them well, but will continue to fight to, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!"

GOOD.
For a while there, I thought he wouldn't care about polling as he's alerady "in" and can do destruction. But his egocentric persoanlity, and SOME level of self awareness that his dropping polls are not good for him, keeps him highly intereted in where he stands with the public.

It's sad in a way because it is a mental illness, that usually can't be helped. The person suffering from it won't accept there is anything wrong with them and won't seek out mental health treatment.
The people who are manipulating his madness for their own benefits are even more despicable than he is.

which, by all accounts, totally infuriated Trump.
"To this day, I receive the occasional envelope from Trump. There is always a photo of himgenerally a tear sheet from a magazine. On all of them he has circled his hand in gold Sharpie in a valiant effort to highlight the length of his fingers," Carter wrote. "I almost feel sorry for the poor fellow because, to me, the fingers still look abnormally stubby."

(9,269 posts)In the NYT/Siena poll, 16% of their sample said they didn't vote in 2024 which seems very high (It would not surprise me if a significant percentage of these people actually voted for Trump but are too embarrassed to admit it now). But amongst those that did, 38% voted for Trump and 38% Harris. When they removed the "did not vote" people, it was 46% to 46%. 6% said they didn't know or refused to answer. I'm willing to bet that the vast majority of those are Trump voters too embarrassed to admit it at this point. Ultimately, the sample was, at worst, 50-50 between Trump and Harris which is what you should expect and in no way a sample that is biased against Trump.
The WaPo/ABC poll was similar. For some reason, they showed an even larger group of people who did not vote in 2024. Again, I would have to guess that there are significant numbers of Trump voters embarrassed by their Trump vote at this point so they lied and said they didn't vote. The breakdown in this poll was:
Voted - Harris = 848 / Voted - Trump = 842 / Did not vote = 729
So again, 50-50 between Trump and Harris which would not in any way be biased against Trump.

No, Im just kidding. Hes actually lashing out at pollsters in new and ridiculous ways. Newsweek noted:
President Donald Trump has said pollsters that have shown his approval ratings sliding in recent weeks should be investigated for election fraud. Trump cited recent polls from The New York Times, ABC News/The Washington Post, and Fox News, which put his approval rating on 42 percent, 39 percent, and 44 percent respectively.
As this week got underway, Trump, shortly before sunrise, published an item to his social media platform that read, We dont have a Free and Fair Press in this Country anymore. We have a Press that writes BAD STORIES, and CHEATS, BIG, ON POLLS. IT IS COMPROMISED AND CORRUPT. SAD!
That came shortly on the heels of a related item, in which he lashed out at FAKE POLLS FROM FAKE NEWS ORGANIZATIONS. The president added, These people should be investigated for ELECTION FRAUD, and add in the FoxNews Pollster while youre at it......
The hysterics were not altogether surprising. Trump did, after all, sue The Des Moines Register for publishing the results of a poll he didnt like. So it stands to reason that hed freak out in response to an avalanche of survey data showing his fading popularity.
But to the extent that reality has any bearing on this discussion, there are a few things to keep in mind here. The first is that there is no conspiracy: Polls show Trump struggling because Trump is failing and much of the public has noticed.
Second, the basis of the presidents weird conspiracy theory is absurd on its face: Pollsters cant be engaged in election interference when there is no election, and the politician in question cant run for re-election. (Even if there were an election, of course, theres nothing improper about releasing public opinion research that one party doesnt like.)
Third, and most importantly, some might feel the temptation to simply shrug off Trumps call for an investigation into criminal polling, but given recent events, that seems inherently risky. This president has already a demonstrated a willingness to direct the Justice Department to go after his perceived foes, and theres no reason to assume hell abandon these authoritarian-style tactics anytime soon.
