House Democrat Makes GOP Colleague Squirm In His Seat Over Trump Tariffs

Rep. Joe Neguse (D-Colo.) took down Rep. John Joyce (R-Pa.) on Monday after the Republican argued in favor of President Donald Trump’s sweeping tariffs.
“You’re not concerned at all about the tariffs?” Neguse pressed Joyce during a House rules committee hearing.
“I think that the tariffs are short-term pain for long-term gain,” said Joyce, echoing Republicans’ justification for the tariffs that — per Trump’s former chief economic adviser Gary Cohn — could disproportionately impact people with low income.
Neguse wasn’t having it. “I can just tell you that my constituents in Colorado didn’t sign up for the short-term pain that you’re apparently comfortable with,” replied Neguse, the assistant Democratic leader of the House. “They don’t want car prices to go up and the fact that you can’t bring yourself to just even agree with me on that premise — the notion that, generally speaking, we should try to keep costs low — to me speaks volumes.”

Joyce is coming from the bottom part of the "Pennsyltucky 'T'" -

I just don't hear his name mentioned much, if at all. He got in that seat after the redistricting in 2018 when the PA Supreme Court finally torpedoed the long-gerrymandered Congressional districts here.

And we almost took the district adjacent to to PA-13 - PA-10 (Scott Perry's).

(52,104 posts)if Trump has been so adamant about manufacturing within the United States, why has most of his own merchandise been manufactured outside of the country? I'd like Trump to be asked that, but he'd blabber on about something else and never give an answer.

2) It is not clear that apparel manufacturing or rare earth refining factory jobs are desirable for workers.
3) The pain will last for years, even if tRump completely reversed course Thursday.
4) The pain is likely to be deep.
5) The gains won't come for years. tRump may announce "deals", but they will mostly be like the FoxConn deal that he even broke ground for but was a fantasy.
Business will wait for a year or two to see if the tariffs stick or if tRump backtracks to try to avoid a 2026 Blue Storm Surge. Then it will take several years for financing, design, local and state approvals, construction, testing, and coming up to speed.
Further, Lutnick says out of one side of his mouth that manufacturing jobs will be so plentiful and wonderful that families will work in them for generations (interview on Wednesday or Tuesday).
Out of the other side of his mouth he says that almost all of the jobs will be done by humanoid robots.
