Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was elected as pope on Thursday, the first time an American has been selected as pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church. Prevost, 69, chose the papal name Leo XIV.

A Chicago native who spent much of his ministry in Peru, Prevost was chosen on the second day and fourth ballot of the cardinals’ conclave in Vatican City. His election was announced by Cardinal Dominique Mamberti more than an hour after cardinals signaled his election with plumes of white smoke billowing from a chimney atop the Sistine Chapel.

Pope Leo, who is a member of the Augustinian Order, appeared on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, where he addressed a large crowd gathered in the huge square below in both Italian and Spanish. He did not speak in English. The prior pontiff, Pope Francis, died April 21 at age 88.

In recent Vatican conclaves, the new pope’s name was announced between 25 minutes and 66 minutes after white smoke was seen above the Sistine Chapel. White smoke was seen at about 12:07 p.m. ET.

Francis pushed back where he could but American conservative Catholics hated him this is meant tell them they need to deal with how the church has changed. The fact that he was not even close to a front runner and was picked after just a few votes probably means this had been in the works for a while and kept very quiet. It's also a shot at Cardinal Dolan from NY who is Trump's buddy and many conservatives would have liked.

It says Pope Leo(as he wishes to be called) is considered a centrist. He is said to be planning to continue reaching out to help marginalized groups such as immigrants and the LGBTQ community similar to Pope Francis. Although it was reported he did once make a homophobic slur in the past. He also believes in climate change and is more lenient on issues such as divorce.

One of the polices that represents his conservative side is that he opposes women being ordained as priests which is disheartening but expected. They've always tended to be sexist.

in the world, the "menfolk" better repent of their ways, or expect to be given lessons in how we've been treated for millenia. Just my opinion. I've lost patience. The fact this pope isn't going to do better where women of faith are concerned is certainly disheartening, but not at all unexpected. I firmly believe that every marginalized group in the world will be admitted into the "tolerance" club long before women are considered to be equal. Men are just too terrified of us.

Enough to show appropriate ceremony, but still humble, in my non-Catholic and non-expert opinion.

I love that the first American Pope was born in Chicago. Lots of great people come from Chicago. I was born there myself! And it is a very Catholic city, so it tracks.

I am not and never will be Catholic, for a variety of reasons, but the Pope is a very influential person in this world, and for that reason, who it is matters to me. Welcome, Pope Leo!

but left the church because of several issues like the hypocrisy and many higher ups in the American Catholic church becoming too aligned with the right wing politicians.

While I still have problems with the institution, and probably always will, the choices of Pope Francis and now Pope Leo, have given me a glimmer of hope that they may become a powerful ally against the likes of tsf, j.d., eloon and all their nutty "christian," nationalist followers.

Receiving the honor of being made a pope is quite a big deal...but the trouble and pain of having to take a call from Donald Jerk makes one have to kiss his rosary one hundred times. Is there a prayer to make him go away? Can you bless him to get a pestilence? Maybe a sign from above can knock a bible off the shelf and crack his skull open. Some sort of divine intervention would be widely welcomed around the world. Let us pray!! Again, for our new guy from Chicago...Mazel Tov!!!
