'Sit on their butt at home': Republican smears Medicaid recipients in call for cuts

Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) demanded cuts to Medicaid spending because he claimed recipients "sit on their butt at home." While speaking to right-wing influencer Charlie Kirk on Monday, Scott rejected calls to raise tax rates on the wealthiest Americans.

"First off, I've never ever voted for a tax increase," the senator insisted. "We need lower taxes and we'll get more revenues." "So no new tax increases, none," he continued. "Reduce spending. That's what we have to do."

Scott said he would pursue Medicaid cuts instead of increasing taxes on the rich.

"Take Medicaid. Medicaid should be a program for the poor and the chronically ill. That's what should be," he remarked. "Not to have people sit on their butt at home that don't want to work." Scott acknowledged that Medicaid "might be nice to have, but that's somebody's money."

And paid fines of 1.7b dollars in 2000. He took the Fifth 75 times so he wouldn’t answer questions and somehow admit his Columbia/HCA billed Medicare and Medicaid for unnecessary tests or in some cases, billed for more expensive tests. That he even dares to address this issue is revolting to those of us in Florida that remember.

9. Yes. My friend and former neighbor, Cindy, is on Medicaid and sits on her butt all day..in a wheelchair.

She’s afflicted with Guillain-Barre syndrome and is paralyzed. She has a nurse come in the morning and evening to take care of her urine drainage bag, clean her catheter and wipe her privates. She has a big van come to take her to doctors, family and friends run her errands and get her food, wash her laundry, clean her house while she sits on her butt. She’s not allowed to own anything so she can receive benefits. She was a great friend to help with things like she did for me..install my faucets in my kitchen n bathroom, hang curtains, fixed my kitty door and many other things as she was quite handy with tools. Remarks like recipients just sit around all day is repulsive and ignorant..especially from the likes of Rick Scott.

I THINK I just finished doing the Medicaid end of life stuff for my Mom. I've sent in the final paperwork; tho I haven't heard back from anyone to tell me the case is closed. She ended her life pretty much destitute except for her SS check. All other assets were spent on her paying the nursing home while she had any assets. To that point, we sold everything in order to pay for her memory care. But these guys want to make sure you died destitute, or they'll claw back anything and everything. It's a hell of a thing to go through while you're still so fresh in the initial stages of grieving.

I dare say he has never known a "lazy" person in his life. He would be shocked to know that "lazy" people suffer from a form of mental illness. Yes. I've been around the block a time or two, and most of the people I've ever known do like to work. Workaholics are a form of mental illness too. I have only known one person in my life, personally, who could be classified as truly lazy. He looks absolutely normal. He's intelligent. He is 57 yrs old. But he has never, throughout his life, been able to hold down a job for more than 6 months at a time. One thing I know for sure is that he is mentally ill and has received very little mental health care simply because it probably seems like a job so he refuses to keep up with it. I do know that he has never been on the public dole, though.
Shame on this filthy rich man for looking down his nose at our misfortunate on Medicaid, classifying them as simply "lazy".
