Public support for abolishing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has reached record levels following the fatal shooting of 37-year-old mother Renee Nicole Good by an ICE agent in Minneapolis.
A new poll from YouGov and The Economist shows that 46 percent of respondents now support the proposal to dismantle the agency, while 43 percent remain opposed; a significant jump from June 2025, when support stood at just 27 percent.
While official authorities claim the agent feared for his life, critics argue that video footage shows the shooting was unnecessary as the victim was attempting to drive away. This incident has reignited a fierce political debate, with progressive Democrats like Rashida Tlaib renewing calls to abolish the agency, while centrist groups warn that such a stance could be "politically lethal" and benefit Republicans in the 2026 midterms.
The fact that 47 percent of independent voters now back the dissolution of ICE suggests that this issue will remain a central pillar of American political discourse in the coming months.
