Trump threatens to use the Insurrection Act to 'put an end' to protests in Minneapolis

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) President Donald Trump on Thursday threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act allowing him to deploy troops as protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement persist in Minneapolis.
Trump made the threat after a federal officer shot a man in the leg in Minneapolis on Wednesday after being attacked with a shovel and broom handle. The incident further heightened the sense of fear and anger radiating across the city a week after an immigration agent fatally shot a woman in the head.
Trump has repeatedly threatened to invoke the rarely used federal law to deploy the U.S. military or federalize the National Guard for domestic law enforcement, over the objections of state governors.
If the corrupt politicians of Minnesota dont obey the law and stop the professional agitators and insurrectionists from attacking the Patriots of I.C.E., who are only trying to do their job, I will institute the INSURRECTION ACT, which many Presidents have done before me, and quickly put an end to the travesty that is taking place in that once great State, Trump said in social media post.

He's been doing everything he can to justify triggering this - shooting and killing people, having thugs pepper spray and throw flash bangs at peaceful protestors, etc. And then he would probably try to have it apply nationwide. Hope Keith Ellison can get a judge moving on a TRO, quick, fast, and in a hurry.

Or, we can start understanding what is happening and what is going to happen, and make preparations.
Which one will we pick?

(20,537 posts)That will be a watershed moment when we go from a freedom loving democracy to a dismal police state. That will be the day we learn what he meant when he said the National Guard was in cities doing "training exercises".
Now he has a well armed and armor clad federal SWAT police force ready to sweep the streets of "insurrectionists and lawless protestors".

(17,093 posts)But it is going to be (unfortunately) only a matter of time until someone shoots back. ABSOLUTELY NOT CONDONING VIOLENCE!!! But I feel it's inevitable, and I can completely understand someone wanting to fight back.
I grew up in Uvalde. So it's like the sister of the victim who was ejected from the court room for screaming out when they were trying to blame her dead sister for not locking a door in a classroom. I completely understand her emotion and why she did it. I even kind of admire her for speaking up, etc. because I know the "good ole boys" network down there and I see what is happening. But I also understand that her doing that risked the judge granting a mistrial. He's a Republican and he'd have loved an excuse to do that. So, rationally, she didn't need to give him an excuse.
We are in unfamiliar waters just like that sister. We need some smart and creative LEADERS who can help the masses peacefully yet EFFECTIVELY navigate this. We don't have that - at least not now. The masses are trying but what they've done hasn't been all that effective up to this point. Someone in authority needs to step up, devise a meaningful plan and figure out a way for us ALL to participate. If it's a boycott, so be it. But we need to all be unified or it won't work. And individual groups calling for the mass public to boycott Amazon doesn't cut it. We need an Obama-like, or Bill Clinton-like figure, or SOMEONE who can appeal to the masses. I'm not suggesting that it be Obama or Clinton - but I am suggesting that it needs to be someone with that kind of charm, finesse, intelligence and gumption.

(1,283 posts)Seriously. This cannot go on. He is eviscerating our country and our democracy on a daily basis. We cannot wait three more years. Our leaders and the people need to demand it end. We need to take every legal measure possible to demand it end.

(1,658 posts)The ratio of guns to American citizens is over 1:1, with estimates suggesting around 1.5 firearms for every person, meaning there are more guns than people, a unique situation globally, with about 120 guns per 100 residents, though ownership is concentrated, with a small percentage of owners holding many guns.
Recent data shows approximately 500 million firearms in circulation for a population over 345 million.

(42,968 posts)he invokes. Because of massive evidence of ICE unprovoked violence at worst, and citizens' peaceful protests, this can't be used as any exception to the Posse Comitatus Act.
The President is typically required to issue a proclamation ordering those involved to disperse.
The Act's conditions are broad, giving the President considerable discretion, though experts suggest a true emergency is necessary. Courts have generally deferred to the President's judgment on the need for the Act, but the legality of military actions once deployed can also be reviewed.

(2,675 posts)Stopping ICE? And any "troops"? He can mobilize the NG to defend the people of Minneapolis. And what about the city and state cops? Who do the "serve and protect"?
BTW-- Minnesota has a Castle Doctrine, which allows individuals to use force, including deadly force, to defend themselves without a duty to retreat when they are inside their own home.

(14,731 posts)I firmly believe that he will be doing this. Its a matter of when, not if.
Id much rather they trigger it now, with time for both people to see what hes doing and react, and with time for subsequent court actions to play out.
The alternative is that they trigger it shortly before the midterms. Suppress the vote by scaring people and by actually physically suppressing the vote. With no time for people to respond or courts to do anything before they win a miraculous "Victory" in the elections.
It also might give him something to do other than invade other countries and starting wars.
Do it now. At least now we have some chance to deal with it. Please get overeager and blow your load in your diaper, lil donny.
