US lawmakers in Denmark seek to 'lower temperature' after Trump's Greenland threats

COPENHAGEN, Jan 16 (Reuters) - A bipartisan delegation of U.S. lawmakers met the leaders of Denmark and Greenland in Copenhagen on Friday, seeking to "lower the temperature" with assurances of congressional support after President Donald Trump's threats to seize the Arctic island.

Trump has said Greenland is vital to U.S. security because of its strategic location and large supply of minerals and has not ruled out the use of force to take it. European nations this week sent small numbers of military personnel to the island at Denmark's request.

The 11-member U.S. delegation, led by Democratic Senator Chris Coons, met Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and her Greenlandic counterpart Jens-Frederik Nielsen, as well as Danish and Greenlandic parliamentarians.

"There's a lot of rhetoric, but there's not a lot of reality in the current discussion in Washington," Coons told reporters following the meetings, saying the lawmakers would seek to "lower the temperature" on returning home.

“Look, calm down, we all know the guy’s fuckin’ insane. We’re not going to let him invade Greenland (eye role), but you guys need to go along and humor him. Flattery and bribery is the name of the game. We can’t believe we have to spell it out. Jeezh! You Europeans take everything so seriously.”

I don't think he wants to invade anything. Just extract as much as possible to make the rhetoric go away.

Please, please Greenland, Denmark, NATO, Europe...give him NOTHING!!! He'll just be back for more later if you do--and then he does "own" you in some way

Steal their factories, the land they own in the USA?
Can I expect US Troops to kick my employer's door in, station armed guards on the factory floor?

Will the Danes who are here get notice to flee the USA?

We are excluded or kicked out of NATO, what does that do to international trade? How negatively will the fascist felon's actions impact our finances.

I work for a private company based in Denmark. Losing my job would suck, but not as much as NATO crumbling.
