Trump says eight European countries face 10% tariff for opposing US control of Greenland

Last edited Sat Jan 17, 2026, 01:33 PM - Edit history (1)

Source: Guardian

In a lengthy Truth Social post, he said “Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, The United Kingdom, The Netherlands, and Finland have journeyed to Greenland, for purposes unknown”, adding: “This is a very dangerous situation for the Safety, Security, and Survival of our Planet.”

The US president said 10% tariffs will be imposed on all goods the countries export to the United States from 1 February, followed by a 25% rate from 1 June.

“This Tariff will be due and payable until such time as a Deal is reached for the Complete and Total purchase of Greenland,” he added.

Trump reiterated his warning that “China and Russia want Greenland”, saying “there is not a thing that Denmark can do about it”.

Awww, the Bullshitter-and-Bully-in-Chief isn't happy.

LOL at him saying those countries "journeyed" to Greenland (what century is he living in?) "for purposes unknown."

He's such an ass, and an embarrassment not just to the US, but to the entire human race.

EDITING to add a Bluesky post with a screenshot of the WH idiot's Truth Social post:

Trump: "Starting Feb 1, all above mentioned Countries (Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, UK, Netherlands, & Finland), will be charged a 10% Tariff. On June 1, it will be increased to 25%. It will be due until such time as a Deal is reached for the Complete and Total purchase of Greenland."

were ever to regain control of both Houses, the presidency, and the supreme court they should immediately strip the power to impose tariffs from the president. Among a whole host of things that they should do.

I mentioned the supreme court too. In my opinion another thing which Democratic politicians must immediately do is either impeach several of the Republican supremacist court injustices, and/or expand the court.

I agree it's what's needed, but dems put off presenting bold ideas cuz they don't have the majorities to pass the legislation, & they can't get the majorities because they fear alienating the public by suggesting bold ideas. That's my take on it anyway. As a party, they need to shirk off their fear. I have a lot of hope in the younger gen dems.

"These tariffs are due and payable" He is trying to deceive the American people that foreign countries pay the tariffs. Trump is just going to make the U.S. economy worse. These countries will just put tariffs on our product, and the trade war gets worse.

Once Trump commits himself to whatever bullshit storyline he thinks benefits him, it doesn't matter how many people point out it's a lie, he sticks to his story. The man has zero shame.

When the rich speak they have many supporters;

though what they say is repugnant, it wins approval.

When the poor speak people say, “Come, come, speak up!”

though they are talking sense, they get no hearing.

When the rich speak all are silent,

their wisdom people extol to the clouds.

When the poor speak people say: “Who is that?”

Sirach, Chapter 13:22-23

It is more difficult to get people to disbelieve a lie than it is to get them to believe a lie.

"The glory which is built upon a lie soon becomes a most unpleasant incumbrance. ... How easy it is to make people believe a lie, and how hard it is to undo that work again!"
Mark Twain

Congress (read:GOP). You can prevent/stop this. He can only refer to National Security as the authority, but make him prove it. The only threat is that he says one exists....which is bullshit.

Justice matters.

The allies are there to defend against hostile Governments like Russia, China and the United States of America.

"The Complete and Total purchase of Greenland?" He is the only thing I see that threatens the Safety, Security, and Survival of our Planet. Its like Whack-A-Mole--every time you think you've got him halfway under control somewhere, he pops back out some place else.
I don't see a way around other countries having to sanction the U.S. for trump's lunacy. We the people will be hurt the most.

And not the American consumer?

This will just drive European countries to stop trading with the US and look elsewhere.

Probably not that much trade to the US from those countries normally, anyway.

Why does he think Russia or China want the place?

The US already has a base there anyway.

Absolutely no point in 'acquiring' Greenland, other than Trump's ego driven insanity.
